Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals

When a small brown box arrived at our PO Box with a stunning photograph of a goat taped to the outside of it, I knew at once that the box contained something special.  I mean, a goat.  How perfect.

Inside was Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals by Sharon Lee Hart, a book celebrating individuals who have managed to make it out of the human food system alive.  Done in black and white, the pictures show more than just cute animal portraits.  Each picture embodies the personality of each of the animals.  You’ll be met with these gorgeous faces with eyes that seem to speak to you directly from the pages of the book.  Alongside each portrait is a handwritten account from the sanctuary where each one now lives of how they made it to safety.

You’ll learn about Mata Hari, an elusive ewe who managed to evade capture for months in Ann Arbor.  Hermie, a tiny chick rescued from a reptile show where he was destined to be snake food.  Terrain, the sole survivor of a hatching project.  Dee Dee, a hen from Harlem who was rescued from a live meat market by a homeless man.  Or Mary Jane, a runty sick pig that someone had purchased from an Amish family for $7.  And many others.

Mixed in are loving tributes and stories about animals who have touched the lives of those around them, as told from the sanctuary owners and workers themselves.  It’s a beautiful compilation, guaranteed to make you smile and tear up all at the same time.

Each day millions of animals are treated as mere things, to be used and discarded at the whim of humans.  It can be an overwhelming thing once you open your eyes to it.  This book is a reminder, a touching and beautiful reminder, of what we are all working so hard to achieve- freedom and autonomy for all animals.  I can’t recommend this book enough.

One lucky YDV Reader is going to win a copy of Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals signed by Sharon Lee Hart as part of our Gratitude Giveaways.  Not familiar with our Gratitude Giveaways?  It’s a month-long celebration of YDV Readers where we’ve partnered up with some fantastic companies to give you some awesome vegan swag.  After all, we’d be nowhere without our readers.  It’s our way of saying thank you for your constant support.  Really, thank you.

If you aren’t the lucky winner, you can purchase a copy of the book at www.farmanimalsanctuaryproject.com and 10% of the proceeds will be donated back to the sanctuaries.

I have liked you and the sanctuary on FB. I am challenging myself to paint 365 paintings in a year. So far I am right on track. When I became a vegan only about 40 days or so ago I started getting this huge urge to paint animals – and just recently (because I was encouraged to) I have opened an etsy shop which is selling some of my prints. A percentage of animal prints will go to animal causes. Ah… it feels like a calling and I am feeling pretty blissed out right now. Oh and yes I would LOVE that book. Asta x

I have a particular fondness for books that highlight individual animals and their stories. I’m excited to learn that there is another one to add to my bookshelf!

This books seems to be so wonderful I can’t wait to be able to have it in my hands <3
I lived with a bunny (Tamborcito) who was rescued by chilean abolitionist organization EligeVeganismo, who passed away last year (November 4). I still miss him so much it hurts, but I'd like to take the chance to tell everyone that saving the life and taking care of an animal who is a victim of speciecism is one of the most beautiful and rewarding experiences ever. Don't hesitate to adopt or support, or work in a sanctuary. You'll never regret it.

Living in the city it is so easy to feel separate from the animals we are trying to change the world for.

I only just recently discovered there is a slaughterhouse just down the road on an industrial estate, where I take my recycling and took my driving license test! How could I not know this until now?

Anyway, I love the look of this book, seeing the animals alive, free from harm and safe – beautiful. I just wish they could all live like this.
