Help Uplands PEAK Sanctuary Turn Their Visions Into Success

Indiana, while small, has some of the most heavily utilized factory farms in the country. Fourteen of the state’s counties are marked as having extreme density levels in these facilities. According to Factory Farm Map, “there are only twice as many farmed hogs as people in Indiana,” and “more than 6 million egg-laying hens on factory farms in Adams County, Indiana produce as much untreated manure as the sewage from the San Diego metro area.” In 2007 it was counted that the average factory farm in Washington County had 206,699 animals that year.
There is no better way to combat these alarming numbers than by helping a new sanctuary in Indiana to find its footing and to help the owner’s visualize their goal of a permanent home to victims of the factory farming industry. Uplands PEAK (People, Earth, and Animals in Kinship) Sanctuary will be opening this year in the town of Salem, located in Washington County, with a a mission “to create a compassionate and harmonious world where people, earth and animals live in kinship.”
The Land.
The goals of Uplands PEAK Sanctuary are ambitious. On 20 acres of land, they intend to not only foster refugee animals, but to hold vegan cooking classes, workshops, organic gardening and other activities that promote a connection of humans, earth, and animals. The sanctuary will also offer day tours, opportunities to camp on the property grounds, and modest bed and breakfast accommodations. They are building not only a new sanctuary, but a new community for vegans in Indiana. You cannot help but want to help the owners turn their visions into a success.
The co-founders of Uplands PEAK Sanctuary are Michelle Pruitt, a dedicated animal rights activist since 2011, Kelly Cramer, an animal rights activist with a background in non-profit management, and Mark Pruitt, an animal rights activist who has even testified in the Indiana State Court on animal rights issues. Valerie Cox, a nutritionist, and Tiffany Ray Bonkosky, a social worker, both also dedicated animal activists, will be the directors of the sanctuary.
Before renovations begin.
Uplands PEAK Sanctuary gained non-profit status in February this year, and can officially take tax deductible donations. They are still in their start-up phase, and so every amount, small or large, counts. They are currently looking to raise $5K for fencing and other supplies, and they are almost at their goal.
