How Mayim Bialik Led Me to the Truth About Bill Gates

An innocent Tweet, an innocent Facebook link share, and MIND BLOWN.

What's in this post

seek truth

There I was, lazily scrolling through my Twitter feed, when I came across the following:

I thought that was sort of interesting news, and headed over to YDV’s Facebook page to share the link. One comment, a Google search, and a few clicks later, and I was newly-schooled on the fact that Bill Gates owns 500,000 shares of Monsanto.

I had another moment of “How did I not know?” Some of you might recognize that moment; it’s the same as when you learn about the fact that cows need to be pregnant to be milked. Once you know something, you might feel stupid for not knowing it before.

That’s sort of how I feel about this whole Bill Gates thing. But I also feel grateful.

I’m grateful for following Mayim Bialik on Twitter and seeing that link. I’m grateful for posting it to Facebook, thinking that a rich investor putting money into a vegan product was potentially a good thing. I’m grateful for discovering that Bill Gates invests in a company that I hate (and another that I’m excited about). And I’m grateful for the reminder that I don’t have all of the answers, that there is still so much to learn.

We do not live in a perfect world. Animal byproducts are in our cars and our laptops. Small vegan companies are run by larger, non-vegan conglomerates. Companies sell out on ethics so they can do business with countries that require animal testing. Food labels change, including ingredients that weren’t there the last time you looked. And people who you don’t entirely agree with are often behind products you stand behind.

Do I agree with everything Bill Gates does? No. Do I think his investment in Beyond Eggs is a good thing? Yes. I hope it leads to more investors, ultimately making this product affordable and available to everyone. Do I know for a fact that new information won’t come up and change things? Nope, and that’s ok.

Never stop questioning, and never stop evaluating your stance. As Fox Mulder was so fond of saying, “the truth is out there.” We just have to remember to trudge through the lies and distractions to find it sometimes.
