Keeping Up with the Vegans: Episode One

As much as I'd like to promote every vegan thing I can, it simply is not practical or fair as I'd never really be able to promote them all. Enter Keeping Up with the Vegans, a weekly post about all the vegan tidbits that are shared with me.

Keeping Up With The Vegans

I receive a lot of requests to promote vegan things: kickstarters, gofundme’s, indie campaigns, book releases, vegan convenience food, and anything else you can think of.  As much as I’d like to promote every single vegan thing I can, it simply is not practical or fair as I’d never really be able to promote them all.  Plus, let’s be honest, no one wants to read a site that is nothing but sponsored posts and “advertisement” style reviews.  Still, I want to help- after all, I advocate for a more vegan world every day and (most) of the folks who contact me do as well.  I wholeheartedly support those on a vegan mission.  On that note, allow me to present to you: Keeping Up with the Vegans, a weekly post roundup of the vegan tidbits that are shared with me.

New Books

Among Animals: The Lives of Animals and Humans in Contemporary Short Fiction by John Yunker is a diverse collection of stories that explore the ways in which we live among—and often in conflict with—our non-human counterparts. These stories feature animals from the familiar (dogs and cats) to the exotic (elands and emus), and in these stories animals are both the rescuers and the rescued.

Powerful Vegan Messages by H. Jay Dinshah and Anne Dinshah explains the ethical reasons for veganism and encourages readers to take positive action for a compassionate world. The book begins with the golden rule, explains reverence for life, teaches ahimsa, and provides valuable wisdom for everyday life.  Over forty vegan luminaries tell how they were influenced and inspired by Jay. The Campbell, Esselstyn, and Robbins families join the Dinshahs in an engaging foreword.

Borrowed, Blue + Vegan Too, Your Guide to Rocking a Vegan Wedding by Vegan Weddings HQ is a step-by-step resource to veganizing each element of a wedding, from alcohol, attire, cosmetics, decor, and more.

Stellar Vegan Salads by Sharon Discorfano, author of Letters to Pushkin and voice of the popular Cruelty-Free Faves site. Discorfano aims to excite readers with combinations that are both easy to recreate and simply delicious, with pictures that will entice even the most skeptical eater.

Meat Logic: Why Do We Eat Animals? by Charles Horn examines the thought process of prejudice and connects the thought process of eating animal products with the thought process of racism, sexism, and other prejudices, but all in a very down-to-earth and easy-to-read and nonjudgmental way.

Business Opportunities

The creators of Cinnaholic, the Berkeley-based vegan bakery specializing in gourmet cinnamon rolls, just announced a franchise deal.  Soon, people all over the country will be able to stuff their faces with chocolate chip cookie dough rolls, macadamia brownie banana rolls, and salted caramel apple pecan rolls.  People interested in opening their very own Cinnaholic can apply on the Cinnaholic website.

Movies

“The Ghosts In Our Machine” is now available through iTunes, Amazon, and Google play, and through cable TV video-on-demand.  See more information and for viewing options.  Join the Twitter campaign with #Fortheghosts

The short film “Turlock” is about the rescue of chickens from the largest animal neglect case in U.S. history.  It was exactly two years ago that NoCal animal sanctuary Animal Place found out a factory farm in nearby Turlock closed, and 50,000 hens were abandoned and left to die without food and water. After a dramatic standoff with local authorities, rescuers raced to save as many lives as they could.  Filmmaker Keegan Kuhn just finished an extended version of “Turlock,” and they’re making it available for grassroots groups, meetups, clubs, and individual activists who want to host screenings in their communities.   Sign up at TurlockRescue.org to host a screening or look for a screening happening in your area.

Videos

Chad Ackerman sent over an email saying,

I decided to make the music video into a horror/zombie theme with a vegan twist.  I really hope you enjoy it and this is not intended for spam or to just post shit on your site.

The video Chad sent over is embedded below because, “not intended to just post shit on your site,” is awesomely honest, obviously.
