Vegan Fathers Day

Is the dad in your life like the dedicated male penguin who watches the egg for the duration of the harshest winter on Earth? Or maybe he’s like a faithful father swan who co-parents even at the nest-building phase?

You can show the vegan dads in your life an awesome Father’s Day on Sunday by knowing what he likes and doing a little planning. Not all dads will neatly fit into the categories below, but maybe you’ll find some inspiration across categories- combining is encouraged. The vegan dad in my life (my husband and the father of our two year-old) is a hiker-eater, so I’m planning accordingly.

The Hiker: Since our boy could fit in the hiking back, we’ve gone out to woods, mostly because it’s my husband’s favorite thing. So we’re driving just under an hour to Yellow Springs, Ohio to some hiking spots that are quite nice and family-friendly. What’s near your area for the hiker dad in your life who enjoys communing with nature and family at the same time?

The Eater: My husband is also an eater, and for special occasions, he picks junk food. In Yellow Springs there’s a corner ice cream joint that does vegan hotdogs and vegan Oreo “blizzards”… If it was Mother’s Day we’d be going to the cute patio of the vegan-friendly cafe down the street to satisfy my preference.

The Social Butterfly: If you have a social vegan dad to plan for, try hosting a cookout. Find some other people who may want to come and treat them to some of your favorite vegan grill treats (Tofurky dogs!) and grilled pineapple for dessert.  Here’s a  Vegan BBQ Sauce recipe to help you out.  Knock back some vegan wine or beer, too! Check out Barnivore.com to find out if your spirits are vegan.

The Reader: Get dad My Beef with Meat by Rip Esselstyn, Skinny Bastard by Rory Freedman, Vegan on the Cheap by Robin Robertson, Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman, or (for a radical dad or a dad you want to make radical) try Defiant Daughters: 21 Women on Art, Activism, Animals, and the Sexual Politics of Meat.

What are you doing for the vegan dads in your life? What new categories would you add to the list? Musician? Movie-lover? Gardner?
