Being vegan, at least for me, involves a lot of careful thought. Not about how to be vegan, but about the assumptions that are made around such “being.”

Here are some things I know… I’d like to call them “what I know for sure,” but seeing as this is an opinion piece, I wouldn’t want to be called bossy or anything.

(Who am I kidding? Call me bossy. I don’t care. Here is what I know for sure.)

  • Caring about this cause does not mean not caring about other causes.
  • Getting it right doesn’t mean you’ll never get it wrong.
  • Just because I’m vegan doesn’t mean I have all the answers.
  • I don’t automatically think I’m better than you or anyone else.
  • Eating animals isn’t a personal choice unless someone else’s rights aren’t involved.
  • You may think there are much more important things going on in the world. You may think that because you’ve been brainwashed.
  • I’ve been brainwashed, too. Been there, done that. It’s never too late to wake up.

Being vegan is the easy part. The difficulties lie everywhere else.
