November: A Month for Vegans

By Daria Zeoli, Editorialist

November is a big month. My mother was born in November. Some of my closest friends (past and present) were born in November. I wrote a novel in November. I adopted a beagle in November. I went vegan in November.

The founding of the world’s first Vegan Society happened in November – on November 1, which is now World Vegan Day. Donald Watson coined the word vegan – a word which means many things to many people, but which was intended as follows:

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

I went vegan on Thanksgiving five years ago, and I am grateful that I can associate that day with something beautiful instead of something painful. Every year in November, I celebrate my own traditions. I adopt a turkey as part of Farm Sanctuary’s annual program, and I reflect on the year that’s passed and on all of the vegan-related happenings I’ve experienced. I’ll be doing both of those things later this month.

To those of you who have been a part of my journey, thank you. To those who have allowed me to be part of yours, I’m honored. Let’s celebrate Vegan Month with gratitude and a big dose of badassery, shall we?

Happy early Veganniversary! Any special reason behind the date?

I finally couldn’t ignore the animal cruelty any more. I was vegetarian about 2/3 years beforehand
