A visit from Andria from Veg is Sexy

I am asked constantly about why I decided to name my site “Veg is Sexy.”  Well, frankly I do think that committing to a compassionate, vegan lifestyle is super sexy!  But when I say “sexy” I don’t just mean sexual, I mean fun, fresh, exciting, attractive, amazing!  I aim to inspire people to feel confident about their dietary and lifestyle choices and make them feel good about the paths they have chosen.  And speaking of feeling good, that is one of the things I love most about vegan food – the way it makes you feel amazing from the inside out.  I am honored to be sharing my sweet potato chili with YDV for it’s new relaunch – what better way to celebrate than stuffing your face with something awesome?  Congratulations to Your Daily Vegan from one sexy veg to another!  Bon appetit!

Andria’s World-Rocking Sweet Potato Chili

WARNING: Sweet Potato Chili is best made barefoot as it will probably knock your socks off anyway.

1 T olive oil
1.5 sweet onions
4 cloves garlic
2 bell peppers (green, red, yellow, or orange combination)
3 sweet potatoes
1 29 oz can tomato sauce
1 29 0z can pinto beans (make sure they are vegetarian, no lard in ingredients)
1 15 oz can black beans
1 packet McCormick’s original chili seasoning

- Finely chop onions and garlic. Saute in olive oil on very low heat in a large pot until onions start getting soft.
- Add in your chopped peppers and continue stirring until onions become translucent.
- While onions and peppers are cooking, take a fork and ventilate your sweet potatoes by poking holes all around the body of each potato. Stick them in the microwave for about 6 minutes to soften the potatoes and get a head-start on cooking. Chop each potato into small pieces, skin on. They will be hot, so I usually use a clean dish towel to hold them steady. Add the pieces to your pot.
- Add your can of tomato sauce.
- Drain but do not rinse your pinto and black beans. Add to pot.
- Stir in your packet of seasoning.
- Continue simmering on low heat, stirring every so often. Cook for about 45 minutes or until sweet potato pieces are tender.

This will make about 8 servings, I like to make a big pot so there are leftovers. Feel free to half the recipe, but I promise you’ll want more ;)

Andria is the sexy vegan that runs things over at VegIsSexy.com.  Ask her and she’ll tell you that, “the only thing sexier than being happy and healthy is having confidence in your body, your life, and your choices. Forming your own opinions, speaking your mind, and living your truth is infinitely respectable and amazing. Being a vegan…in a world of omnivores is not always easy – but when we do it right and commit to our choices, it is fun, exciting, healthful, compassionate, peaceful, and wonderful,” and we’d have to agree.  Veg is Sexy is dedicated to inspiring you to feel healthy, happy, savvy, sexy, and love your…vegan lifestyle(s).  You can find Andria over at vegissexy.com!

2009 Vegan Care Package Giveaway

This year, Your Daily Vegan took part in the 2009 Vegan Care Package Giveaway.  What’s that?  You’ve never heard about it?  Well!  It’s the brainchild of Lindsay who runs Cooking for a Vegan’s Lover Blog and it’s full of awesome.  Here’s how it works.  A bunch of friendly blogger-type folks agree to be put in the mix to do an exchange of vegan goodness.  Oh, and you have to agree to blog about it.

Since I like presents so much, I signed right up.  And last week I received Neil’s 2009 Vegan Care Package.  Neil guest writes on Cooking for a Vegan’s Lover Blog.  Check out my goodies:

Man oh man, I got some goods.  There’s a bunch of different Prana bars, which I love.  When times get hectic, a raw bar and a juice does me good as a snack or a meal replacement.  Rounding out the snack bars are Gnu Foods bars and Heart Thrive cakes.

Next, a plethora of spices.  We’ve got some red chili flakes, orange chipotle spice mix, and a spice mix for some yummy kidney beans.  Keeping up with the spicy, we move over to some jalapeno hummus from Wild Garden.  And if that isn’t spicy enough, there’s some “Ass Kickin’ Habanero” Popcorn.  Whoa.

And because Neil hails from Vermont, there’s local Vermont stuffing which I made for dinner the other night.  Mmmm.  And to round out the goodies, a bag of whole grain granola.  I love granola and I’m not a bit ashamed to say that it was the first thing to get opened and eaten.

It was a fun experience, going to the store to find things to send and getting a surprise package in the mail.  I would totally do it again, in fact I hope to do it again next year!  Did I mention that I sent a Vegan Care Package of my own to Neil?  I totally did.  Here’s what I sent*:

(*I sent everything pictured minus the Bob’s Oat Bar.  That was partially eaten by my cat because I mistakenly thought that they wouldn’t try to eat through PLASTIC, my mistake.  Sigh.  My cats are bad, cute to be sure, but bad!)

50 Things List Leaves Out #1

Wayne Pacelle’s blog, A Humane Nation, posted an article yesterday titled, 50 Things You Can Do for Animals and the HSUS. For those who don’t know, Mr. Pacelle is the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

The list is striking the nerves of some in the vegan community.  One user, @MFIoF, tweeted “From HSUS: “50 Things You Can Do to Help the Animals and The HSUS”–not a single mention to go #vegan. So sad/pathetic” along with a link to the list itself.  And they’re right.  So what did Mr. Pacelle say excactly?

Well, it says, “Follow the 3 Rs of eating: reducing your consumption of meat and other animal-based foods, refining your diet by avoiding animal products derived from factory farming, and replacing meat and other animal-based foods with vegetarian foods.”

He is advocating vegetarianism rather than veganism.  And if that wasn’t bad enough, the list goes on reading, “Ask your local restaurants and grocery stores to switch to cage-free eggs, and to protect seals by boycotting Canadian seafood.”  Is he implying that we should only purchase seafood from America?

That, after this one, “Adopt a friend for life from a local animal shelter or foster an animal waiting for a home.”

Confused yet?  I am.  Why bother to suggest adopting an animal from a shelter (one that was most likely saved from slaughter) if you are going to also encourage people to support purchasing eggs?  It doesn’t matter if they are “cage-free” or not, it’s still factory farmed.  And regardless of that, it’s still contributing to the slaughter of animals.  Everyone has seen the baby chicken grinder they use to kill male chicks (Please be aware that the link is to a graphic video – view at your own risk), right?

I feel the same way about promoting people’s “reduction” of their consumption of meat.  Reducing the consumption of meat still sends animals to slaughter, whether it’s one cow or two.  With revenues into the hundreds of millions, the HSUS is perfectly set up to make a large, positive impact on animal rights issues- specifically the vegan movement.  It is well past the time for a large animal rights organization to take a firm stand on the human use of animals.  Then real change can begin.
