IS it rude to refuse a birthday cake (your own) if it isn't vegan?
In this article
For my google stat tracker tells me so…..
Everyone checks to see where they get traffic from and if you are anything like me, well you get a kick out of some of the things that gets people here. My favorite google search to date has been:
“IS IT RUDE NOT TO EAT YOUR OWN BIRTHDAY CAKE BECAUSE YOUR A VEGAN?”
Yes, it was in all caps. It shows me that this person was kinda ticked, don’t you think? I mean, someone must have told them that they were rude. Personally, I don’t think it’s rude. If someone is going to take the time to make you a cake (which, to me, indicates that they like you at least a little bit) then why wouldn’t it be vegan if you are?
So to my new YDV reader, let me assure you that it is NOT rude to refuse a non-vegan cake if you are, indeed, a vegan. But then again, that is my opinion. I have an idea. Hey YDV’ers, what do you think? IS it rude to refuse a birthday cake (your own) if it isn’t vegan?
I wanna know what you think! Let’s help this gal/dude/fellow vegan out. Catch you in the comments!

I completely agree! NOT rude! Especially if someone goes out of their way to make a non-vegan item for a vegan.
I have a similar problem that maybe you all can help me with. In my situation though, I’m a teacher and we regularly have class parties and activities where everyone brings food. I of course bring something vegan and eat that. However, food is very culturally significant to my students and they want me to eat their food too. I have a hard time explaining that I am a vegan. I usually just say, “I don’t eat meat.” … “I don’t eat dairy either.” But, I occasionally feel really rude if I don’t bring something of my own and don’t eat their food either. Today, I found myself in a situation where there was NOTHING vegan.
Does anyone have any advice for these situations? Just don’t eat? Easy enough. I should just get over it, I guess?

It is absolutely NOT rude! In fact, I think it is extremely rude for someone to present a vegan with a non vegan bday cake.
So, if I was given a cake that was non vegan, I would of course refuse and if the person who gave it to me said I was being rude, I would in turn tell them that they were being rude and offending me by presenting me with a plate full of dead animal parts!

I think people who would do this care more about themselves and how they look than they do about the vegan, otherwise they’d take the time to make a vegan cake.

I would take the warlike-Spartan approach and bellow at the top of my vegan lungs, “THIS HAS EGGS…AND CREAM…AND BUTTER ?!?!? THIS IS NOT VEGAN !!!!” And into the bottomless pit of non-vegan-ness, the cake, and cake-presenter, would fall- after a stiff kick to their fool-hearty chest…..

Totally NOT rude! Stick with your convictions, people. :)

NO IT’S NOT RUDE TO REFUSE IF YOU ARE A VEGAN, however shouting it may get the point across :)
