"Here's the Meat of the Problem" aka "Reality & Your Eating Habits"

I'd like to personally thank Ezra Klein for bringing some not entirely unknown information to the mainstream media forefront- meat production causes more greenhouse gases than the entire global transportation sector (as we've known for years now).  As he points out, this fact is grossly ignored- even by organizations such as the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) and the Sierra Club.  I know, how can one respect an environmental organization that ignores one of the largest polluters on Earth? I am like, officially, in love with Vegan Brunch!

In my humble opinion, you can never go wrong with a cookbook from Isa Chandra Moskowitz.  From Veganomicon (and those chickpea cutlets!) to Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World (no explanation needed here!), you always get a ton of great recipes that are pretty simple to make.  Her latest book, Vegan Brunch, offers up some of her best "work" yet. So far, I've made the Banana Rabanada, Whole Berry Sauce, Garden Herb Spread and the Cashew Ricotta.  I gotta tell you, I'm in love with the Cashew Ricotta.  I've never cared for real ricotta, it always tasted spoiled to me.  But Isa's version is heavenly.  It's soft with the same texture of real ricotta without any of the nasty animal ingredients.  And what makes it even cooler (as if that is possible), is that it's made with mostly tofu instead of raw nuts.  Most of the faux ricotta recipes I've [...]

Sometimes quitting isn't a good thing…

"New York Now" host, Susan Arbetter, says she's a failed vegan.  She cracked her molar on an olive pit and now, that's her excuse to return to exploiting animals.  Personally, I don't see a correlation to cracking your tooth and going back to eating animals, but that's just me.  What's worse, to me anyway, is that she goes on to say: "My conversion to Veganism was completely suspended on January 4, 2007 when my need comfort food laden with dairy, sugar and chocolate overwhelmed any desire I might have had to make a social impact in the brutal world of Big Agribusiness." Obviously Susan doesn't know what she's talking about.  There are so many plant based alternatives to her "comfort food laden with dairy, sugar and chocolate".  Looking for butter?  Try Earth Balance.  Looking for sugar?  Try Florida Crystals brand.  Hell, even Pillsbury offers a non-bone char powdered sugar.  Looking [...]

Red Bananas and my taste buds are having a love affair…

So, it's what is loosely referred to as "summer" here and that means that I get to go to farm markets.  It is one of my most favorite things to do because you can find all kinds of things.  Recently I went to the local farm and found red bananas.  Now before ya'll start emailing me to say that these aren't local, I know.  But I don't really buy fruit unless it's summer so it's a treat to me. Anyway, these red bananas.  Have you seen these guys hanging out at the grocery store?  They are pretty high up on the cute scale aren't they?  Turns out they are pretty good for you too.  One red banana contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin E, Thamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Vitamin B6, Folic Acid (Folate), Magnesium, Zinc and Copper.  Not only that, they are high in Potassium.  Whew!  [...]
