Editorial opinion and analysis on modern veganism.

The bigger picture…

I've been reading a lot of griping lately on vegan blogs about unhealthy vegan "junk food".  People naturally assume that all vegan food must be healthy since it doesn't contain any nasty animal ingredients, right?  Well, no.  Just because it is vegan doesn't make it healthy.  And some bloggers want you to know that eating vegan junk food is not going to win you good eating awards anytime soon.  But other bloggers, they adore vegan junk food and promote it as "quick food for busy people" or similar.  Take this article, written by the Long Island Press, about food that's "good (and vegan)." Check out the beginning of the article: "Hey, we’re not proud, but we’re honest. And we have discovered a few things along the way that are amazing, that just happen to be vegan. Some are junk food. Some are processed frozen foods. But cut us some slack. As [...]

Should veterinarian be synonymous with vegan?

I found this article the other day and I’ve been thinking a lot about it ever since.  The article is written by Patty Khuly, a veterinarian that claims to be a “target of many who would question my animal rights status” because she isn’t vegan (or vegetarian for that matter).  She says: “Because I’m a veterinarian with a penchant for animal welfare themes in my writing, I have a tendency to be the target of many who would question my animal rights status, most often with respect to what I’m willing to eat — as if somehow this were the defining mark of one’s devotion to animal life. “Are you a vegan? If not, you should shut up, be gone and take your hypocritical opinions with you.” Hmmm … them’s fighting words. And here I was, thinking I was advancing a civil argument as to why animals deserve to be [...]

What's holding you back?

It should come as no surprise that I spend a lot of time reading vegan blogs.  You wouldn’t even believe the amount of vegan things that I read in just one day.  The articles or posts are interesting, but I find myself in the comments more often than not.  I mean, the comments are some of the most absurd things posted online.  There is a staggering amount of mean, uninformed, callous comments – a sheer hatred towards vegans- on some of those articles.  I’m baffled. And just to clarify, I know that there are blogs out there that have and encourage intelligent discourse in the comments.  But those are few compared to the gazillions of … junk that is out there right now. In retrospect, I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked about that at all, since that is the way of the Animal Rights Movement in general.  We are in [...]
