Vegans could learn from Gay Rights Movement?

In an interesting new article, Sherry F. Colb discusses the animal rights movements as compared to the gay rights movement.  It’s a fascinating look at the similarities of each and what we can learn from both. Here’s a snippet: “The first thing to note is that there is a risk in analogizing the struggle for gay rights with the struggle for animal rights. The danger that concerns me is not, as some might think, that of offending people. People were (and some continue to be) offended by comparisons between struggles against racial oppression and struggles against homophobia, but it is precisely the resistance to an unfamiliar claim (especially a claim that implicates one’s own behavior) that makes it seem “offensive.” If inflicting terrible suffering and death on nonhuman animals who can feel pleasure, pain, and a wide range of emotions represents a real harm – and most people acknowledge, at [...]

Vegan Pot Pie, the pie that’s tops!

Sadly, the weather here is getting chilly already.  Cold weather in September?! Yes, unfortunate but true.  It was a smack in your face that summer is over and that fall is officially here.  I was craving a warm dinner, and I had just bought a couple of single serving terracotta baking dishes that I was dying to use, so I decided to make pot pies.  The only problem that I could see is that I didn’t know how to make pot pies.  So off I went to scan the food blogs for a good recipe. And I looked, and looked, and looked.  I read so many recipes that my eyes were crossing!  It seems that the people that love pot pies, all have a favorite style.  And, since it’s a pot pie it can have any kind of filling you can imagine.  It appeared that I was going to have [...]

Friends of Animals calls for a boycott of Idaho Potatoes

We’re going to start this story with the original press release from Friends of Animals simply because it says it all the best: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Priscilla Feral Phone: (203) 656-1522 Even though wolves were only taken off the Endangered Species List in Idaho in May, 2009, Idaho Gov. Butch Otter is not only endorsing the proposed trophy hunt this fall, he’s vowed to participate in it. He told a group of hunters, “I’m prepared to bid for the first ticket to shoot a wolf myself.” The wolf hunt is an apparent effort to boost elk populations for hunters to slaughter, and will begin on September 1, 2009. The permit to kill a wolf costs $11.50—with 220 wolves set to be killed statewide. Equally dismaying is the fact that Gov. Otter claims to “respect” wolves—making the nonsensical claim, in an interview with The Idaho Statesman, “You can still hate [...]

YDV Monday means Rustic Pizza

Rustic Pizza Nom nom nom…nom..nmmm… This is um…nom nom nom…the YDV Meatless Monday meal.  It’s pretty…nom nom nom…..good.  You should totally try it out.  I did and here’s how it all went down. I went searching at the local health food store for a vegan pizza crust.  I’ve never made a crust myself and the task seemed pretty daunting to me.  I search high (in the refrigerated section) and low (in the dairy section!?) but couldn’t find a crust that didn’t have honey in it.  I made a quick stop at the bread section but didn’t see anything there either.  Sigh.  So I began the hunt for a pizza crust mix.  Yes, I require a mix.  There! I admit it. Moving on… I found this and only this as far as pizza crust mixes were concerned: Sweet.  The gluten free didn’t bother me a bit.  [...]
