Review + Recipe: OMG! Maqui Berry Oat Bars

What do you get when you mix supefoods, oats, and nuts? A tasty superfood bar. Learn why you'll be saying OMG!

What's in this post

What started with a group of passionate globe trekkers on the hunt for for organic foods has turned into OMG!, Organic Meets Good.  OMG has created uniquely formulated organic powders that you can add to a variety of foods to give them a nutritional boost.  Everyone likes a nutritional boost, right? We tested out the Pomegranate Powder and the Maqui Berry Powder.

Pomegranate has been around for centuries, I’m sure everyone has heard of how it can help to strengthen our immune system with it’s high quantity of vitamins.  But this powder has been blended with other ingredients like Orgen-Kid (an extract booster that contains Curry, Guava, Lemon, Sesbania, Amla, Holy Basil and Annato Extracts), Camu Camu, and Maqui Berry, which adds even more nutritional benefits like vitamin C, B12, iron, and potassium among others.  What it doesn’t contain is sugar.  Instead, stevia is added for flavor, which I could do without.

So how does it taste?  First, I mixed it in with some almond milk and made enough to share:

Pomegranate Superfood Shake

It’s nice, but it’s quite sweet.  Perhaps it’s the stevia, which I can always taste in things when used and don’t care for.  That said, I’ve never been a fan of sweet drinks anyway so perhaps I’m not a good judge.  My guest was over the moon with the taste, loving it and stating that she could see herself making a shake to take to work with her as a nutritional boost throughout her day.

I also mixed the Pomegranate flavor into my morning oats- which I preferred to the shake.  My old-fashioned rolled oats turned gourmet once I mixed in the powder, plus I got all the nutritional benefits that I could ask for. Again, for me, minus the stevia.

Now lets talk about the Maqui berry. The Maqui berry contains the highest amount of antioxidants of any fruit known. Most of us are familiar with antioxidants in that they fight off free radicals- the pesky particles responsible for abnormal cell growth leading to cancer and premature aging. And to top it off, OMG has added acai powder and green tea extract to the mix. The green tea extract scored more than 10,000 ORAC units per gram, adding more antioxidant power along with the acai. Free radical’s worst nightmare, indeed!

And the taste?  Now this is a berry flavor I could eat over and over again.  It’s not as sweet as the Pomegranate flavor and I don’t taste the stevia at all.  All I taste is rich, blue, berry-liciousness and I like it.  I like it a lot.  I mixed it in a shake.  Loved it.  I mixed it in some soy yogurt.  Loved it.  I made some Maqui Berry Bars.  LOVED it.

Wow, That looks really good. It’s amazing sometimes to see how creative people can be in making taste and absolutely nutritious foods. I might try this with honey instead of agave syrup and maybe add some coconut.
    Thanks for the recipe.

That bar looks awesomely yumful! I’d like to try the Pomegranate in vegan yogurt to sweeten it up a bit…maybe mixed into a kiwi smoothie too. The Maqui flavor sounds perfect! Thanks for the info and link and the recipe!
