What To Do If You Find An Injured Squirrel

What's in this post
Squirrels are a part of daily urban life. They’re cute and fun to watch as they chase each other, climb trees, and nibble on snacks they find foraging. Sadly, many consider them pests when they find their way into homes where they can nest between walls or attics. This can be a problem for homeowners and renters alike because they can cause damage by chewing through electrical cables or insulation.
Learning how to live with the animals residing out of our backdoors is important. Let’s learn about squirrels and what to do if we happen across one who needs our help.
Squirrel facts to know
This fluffy-tailed forager collects nuts and seeds for food and buries them underground, storing them for colder months. Luckily for us, they’re also forgetful. Often they’ll forget where they stored their food, and the abandoned seeds eventually sprout into plants. This means the common grey squirrel is unwittingly responsible for helping to grow hundreds of new plants and trees yearly.
Preferred habitat. Grey squirrels are tree dwellers but will approach nearby home gardens for food. They are easily spotted at the base of trees and disappear up the trunks if disturbed.
Diet. Most, but not all, squirrels are vegetarian. Nuts, acorns, seeds, fruits, & buds are the main foods in a squirrel’s diet. Flying squirrels will eat bird eggs, baby birds, and insects.
Breeding habits. Females give birth twice yearly to litters of between three to seven babies. They typically nest high in trees.

What to do if you find baby squirrels
- Look for the nest or any siblings that might be nearby.
- Search the area for predators, like dogs, cats, or other dangers that might be present.
- Check them for signs of injury.
- Handle babies as little as possible, using a soft cloth such as a washcloth or an old flannel shirt. Place in a protective container with a soft, clean cloth.
- Keep babies warm; this is especially important if they have little to no fur.
- Don’t feed them! Wildlife rehabilitators use a formula specifically for baby squirrels. Do not feed them cow’s milk!
- Look for the mother. She may be trying to find her baby. If you happen to spot her, place the container where she can see and access it. Remember to keep the area safe and watch out for predators!

What to do if you find an injured juvenile or adult squirrel
- Check for signs of injury. Common causes include: Being hit by a car, falling from a tree, being attacked by another animal, and poisoning. Head trauma or poisoning symptoms may include listing to the side, walking in circles, looking/acting dizzy, or bleeding from the nose or mouth.
- If the squirrel is hurt, handle them with care. While squirrels aren’t naturally aggressive, they can claw or bite to avoid capture and have sharp teeth and strong jaws. It’s a good idea to wear thick gloves for protection.
- Throw a towel over the squirrel and scoop him up to put in a box or cage. There are animal cages with detachable bases that can capture a squirrel, similar to catching an insect in a cup and sliding something underneath.
- Don’t hold or pet the squirrel.
- Provide a soft bed; an old shirt will do.
- Keep the squirrel warm.
- Place the box or cage in a quiet area away from other animals.

No matter the squirrel’s age, you should always contact a professional such as Squirrelmender Wildlife Rehabilitation once you’ve rescued the animal from any immediate danger (or determined that you cannot).

People! The comments here are sad but also ridiculous. This is not a rescue page. This is an old article and no one is replying to comments. Even if they were they would only tell you this: If you find a sick or injured squirrel, search for someone in your area to help it. Look for a person or rescue who does wildlife rehabilitation. A regular vet will not likely help you but may be able to direct you to someone who can. YOU WILL NOT GET HELP FROM OLD INTERNET ARTICLES.
I found a squirrel in my backyard, not sure if a dog got to it. It’s definitely injured. What should I do?
My 2 year old male cat proudly brought me the squirrel he bit on the hind leg and back. The squirrel cannot walk and has a puncture wound and is now bleeding pretty bad. How do I care for this poor injured squirrel? I have him in my pet carrier n have wrapped him up n been keeping him warm now for 2 days. Can I clean his wounds with peroxide n antibiotic ointment?
I have left a message with the Wildlife number that google has provided on Friday evening. Today is Sunday and I need to help him. I hope to hear back from someone by tomorrow.

I found a squirrel in my balcony it appears she fell from the tree abject to house – the squirrel is not able to move but it is responding when I touch – probably got injured but there is no blood around . I need help. I found Trixie when her eyes were still closed. I nursed her and she grew into a beautiful squirrel. well she got out of the house one day and discovered the trees. Is it bad to feed squirrels daily I have about 3 squirrels come to my backyard and I started feeding them peanuts walnuts or almonds I noticed black birds come flying snatching all the nuts before the squirrels comeback all nuts are gone in less than a minute so I started putting the nuts in a cat bowl and place the bowl by the glass door so bird can’t get to it 2 of the squirrels they become comfortable coming in by the glass door to eat the nut in a cat bowl without getting scared of us. It’s not easy to find help for an injured squirrel that is capable of scampering away. This little guy cones for peanuts flips over on his side and back while struggling to eat the nut. He’s been like this for anger weeks and he doesn’t appear to be recovering. His disability appears to be worsening. What do I do? Who do I call who would care enough to help? Who do you call when a squirrel has been hit by a car
I’m so sad. There is a squirrel laying on cement patio of an apartment. The neighbor said it wobbled in front of her door and asked me to remove it. It’s laying on it belly legs extended to side. It looks like it has hiccups or hard time with lungs. I went to get a empty tuna can filled with water and couple chunks of zucchini to put next to it by pushing with a broom. Found an injured adult in my driveway who seems unable to move the hind legs. I placed him in my pet carrier with a cushion and paper scraps, and he ate the almonds I gave him. It’s Sunday so the vet is closed. I hate the idea of automatic euthanasia for the little creature if he has a chance to recover.

My sister found an injured squirrel on her walk today in front of our neighbor’s who’s admitted to killing squirrels… no visible lacerations/blood but its two front legs seem stiff & paralyzed (it only shuffles them side to side but cannot grasp or lift things), it sits very still, it seems v lethargic and barely moves (when it does it can’t go far and stumbles), and it keeps falling forward with its eyes open as if it can’t control it. We are going to take it to a rehab facility, but my heart hurts thinking about what could have happened to it… does it sound like it’s been poisoned? Possible head trauma? Result of a car accident? We don’t know if it will require euthanasia but are praying it can be helped :,(

There’s a squirrel in my backyard that I’ve fed sunflower seeds to for possibly years now (i just leave a couple handfuls for all the squirrels everyday so they don’t chew through my bird feeder–i also leave them a bowl of water). Lately I can tell she’s injured herself on one of her front legs. Like she holds her arm to her stomach even when she’s walking now and sort of hops along. She’s always been the friendliest squirrel of the bunch–used to come right up to me when I come out cause she knows I leave her seeds, but now that she’s injured I think she’s scared (she’s become overly cautious, even runs away when she sees me, probably cause she can’t move as fast). I don’t know what to do, if anything? Is there anything I CAN do to help her? Or should I just leave her alone since she’s still mobile and has survived like this for at least a week? Every time I see her now I feel like crying cause I know she’s hurt, but I don’t know how to help her! I’m worried the other squirrels will attack her; sometimes they try to chase each other away (i leave them multiple piles of seeds spaced out, so they won’t fight but some of them get territorial if they happen to come at the same time).

I found a full grown female on the side of a bike path. She is unable to move her two front paws, can barley move her head to look around. basically lanky top part of her body. Hind legs are still working perfect (able to leap) Her eyes seemed red and puffy last night, but swelling went waay down this morning. She has no odors to her. She squeaks when I move her off her face (she still trying to hop around) I successfully gave her water- But food is her issue.
Once every hour she panics till i check up on her.
I live in Canada AB nursing the injured is fine.
Well if you still have her maybe feed her sunflower seeds, peanut butter, or bird suet. They love that stuff. You should probably take her to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation place if she’s got broken bones though.
I chased a dog (boxer) away from a seemingly hurt squirrel that fell out of a tree a few hours ago, it looked like it would be okay. And that it was just In shock, it is moving more now, and its in a cage with water and nuts. It has full fur, but its tail seems to be missing a bunch of fur, probably by the boxer. Should I just wait and see if he will be okay? Or should I return him close to the tree?

My gosh did you ever get a reply from these people who *care so much about animals and squirrels. Its extremely rare for a squirrel to give rabies to a human. But that behavior was scared for its life and putting it all on re praying tou were not there to hurt it and you could help. Or it was Rabid. The later is ver rare.

I just drive an hour to where an old friend called and said there was a suffering and could walk. I drove as fast I as I could safely with m ugh daughter and located it. A juvenile in the main pathway of the busy lake. 20 people passing every 20 minutes or less.amd everyone walked right over her. I thought she was dead with bot flies every where. Once I picked her up she was breathing. Noone in the HS or any wild life facility would come. I brought her home. Immediately washed all bot fly eggs from her so she didint contract fly Stryker. The most horrific thing I’ve ever seen.
Gave her a timey piece of my own valium, a piece of my dogs tramadol and bathed and inspect her thoroughly. 3 day ago. She couldnt move her hind legs at all. I though I was gonna have to peacef8put her down but I couldnt. Up two nights. And now she is eating and drinking from me. The IBUPROFEN the vet recommended brought down swelling of her spine. And now her back legs move. Its apparent that a dog got her probly one if those sick owners… sick em! Her tail off at the bone at 2.5 inches. I n.v thought she was gonna nose her popped out blood socket eye. TAB ointment as cleared so much up and heed her tail. Mostly too. She still cannot walk. But it all works. Ugh she is so sweet and trusting. I couldnt amaging stepping over her as she suffers.

I came across a dying squirrel whilst out running in the forest. Barely alive. Still breathing but a lot of flies were rested on it. I wasn’t sure what to do. Tried to give it some water. I wrapped it in a towel. Moved it away from the trail under a tree. Away from the flies. I covered the towel in leafs and bits of tree. It was still alive when I left. When one of my yard squirrels, known as graypants, showed up this morning, I could tell she was having difficulties. She hopped along not putting any weight on her arms. As she got closer I could see that both of her wrists were broken or injured. I’m wondering if she got caught in a trap? She did eat some nuts then hobbled off. She is a wild squirrel and will not let anyone get too close. Is it possible that her injuries will heal on their own?

I am in Central America..We have no vet that is familiar with small wild animals anywhere near us. 11 days ago I found a small squirrel full hair, not a baby but still a pup and he was hurt he was trying to run away but kept going in a circle to the right..I could see that his right arm or shoulder was hurt..He was only 5 ” long not including the tail..His eyes seemed to be bluish like a small puppy so I don’t think he is that old maybe just a few months at most..We have squirrels living here in the rainforest where we live and I see the adults everyday and another 1 or 2 pups…So I brought him in and he was very thirsty..I have a small serenge and I use it with the plastic nub to give him water and honey and a small bit of vitamins paste for kitties and dogs that we have…He could not walk the first 3 or 4 days but started to recuperate quickly after that…I feed him 3 times a day and keep feeding him the water/milk honey vitamin mix which he loves 3 times a day, and I have bananas and mangos and pineapples growing here so I have that cut in small pieces and he likes that along with cacao nuts and all the local foods they eat…His right forearm was definitely broken I can feel the break compared to the left arm..he is using his right arm and leg now but I can see he is still weak on that side..I put a tree branch 5″ in diameter and 8 ft. tall. in the garage where I keep him away from the dogs and cats in a small cage..3 days ago he started climbing the “tree”..I figured that would be good therapy…He is eating the bark from the branch at the Y in the branch and goes up and down..he is still favoring that right arm but the fingers all seem to be opening now and he is getting much stronger.. Today he was hanging upside down on the branch and having fun and fell about 5 ft. to the floor..it scared him he ran into his cage..I think it was a fall that got him in trouble…So I am not sure if I should let him go yet?? I wanted to make sure he was using his right arm correctly before letting him go..This is wild rainforest here..There are snakes and lots of big birds and other predators all around all the time, so in order for him to make it he needs to have it all working for him.. When I feel he is ready, should I build him a small “house at the base of the tree close to where I found him?? Also I am worried he will not get water there, so we have a stream about 50 yards from where I found him, so maybe I should let him go there and show him the water ?? He snuggles into his bedding every day almost all day long except for when i am exercising him and feeding him..So I don’t know how to handle this..I feel I should have a small house there easy and simple to build and put it in a tree right next to my compost piles where we toss all of our daly organic vege and fruit skins etc. etc. and that is right next to the stream..So I feel that is a good option and hopefully he can reconnect with his family.
Any advice?? If he would have fallen from another 5 ft higher today, he could have really been hurt again….I don’t think he is ready to go back out, but I just don’t know..Thanks for any help you can give me and ASAP if possible…Harlan Busch
I found a squirrel on a rd badly injured, she was hit by a car. I stopped and took her, but I didn’t know what to do because I was going to an appointment. After my appointment she was still alive, but on my way to the vet she died. I feel really bad because I could not do anything to save her. I think that a could do more to try to save her, my heart is broken and I feel guilty for her dead.
Please please don’t feel guilty. What you did was wonderful and way more than most people would have done. My heart breaks for the little guy too. I am trying to help a wild squirrel in my backyard who is scratching to the point of open wounds. I plan to humanly trap and care for him while enroute to our vet. I wish there were more kind hearted people in the world like you. 💜
Came home from work and found an injured squirrel lying on the ground in the back yard. We just got a lot of rain and hail. I think it may have gotten knocked out of a tree. Head was slightly moving and it was breathing. It’s back legs and one of his front legs were not moving. Felt so bad for it. It was drenched. I grabbed some clothes and placed it in a box in the garage, so it at least wouldn’t get rained anymore. Just tried to make it as comfortable as possible. Anything else I can do for it? I don’t think there’s a rehabilitation place near me. Poor little thing.
Hi. My spouse seen one of our regular squirrels today coming for his daily peanuts but today his back right leg was pressed up to his body. He said he thinks it’s broken as I didnt see him. Still haven’t yet. Do u think its broke? What if he doesn’t come back does that mean he went somewhere to pass on. I feel so bad for him. What should I do if he comes back. I do have a cat carrier. The squirrel was laying flat down on the highway….I looked down, carefully drove over him, parked my car. My son hurried and picked him up. I put him in the car, he was out of it. So I went home, left the windows down, car doors opened and checked on him. For two hours he moved a little. Then I went out, he was a lot more alert….looked at me tail flicking…I used a branch to get him out of the car. He climbed under some wood pallets…I’m thinking to die…so I go into the house to get water …I go back out to the car…I hear something in the brush moving fast..and there he was, climbing the fence and into the big maple…..he must have been in shock.

Last night I found a squirrel under my deck that my cat left it’s still alive no visible injuries but it’s not able to walk I’ve kept him hydrated and fed and other than being immobile he is perfectly healthy. Any advice?

Black adult squirrel with a broken front paw. I watched him play in my yard for the past two years. I called several places and no one will care for him. I refuse to let him get eaten by another animal so what do I do now? I’ve been giving water with a syringe but he won’t eat bread or nuts. What else should I try? I’m sure he’s very frightened. Most cities do not take wildlife so saying take them to a professional is not helping at all KD
I live in one of the world’s capital cities, and I found a young squirrel (I suspect after a dog owner had encouraged the dog to go for it, as we have some very sad dog owners here who apparently can’t afford a ball). It was left to die slowly in the wind and rain and had flies all over it, especially the eyes, basically being eaten alive (fly eggs were on the body). It was totally lame in both back legs, in and out of consciousness, not eating. I thought the vet was going to take one look and put it down. I’ll tell you what actually happened.
It is currently in the out-of-hours surgery, being watched overnight. She has given it morphine for the pain, stuff for its fleas and fly eggs, they gave it fluids and nutrition, they are doing an x ray and have a blanketed box ready for it. If there are no lethal internal injuries, it is going to get splints and get collected by volunteers in a town 60km away who will then give it endless care and recuperation time before it goes back into the wild/park. No money taken.
any squirrel is worth saving if it is injured people say oh their rodents but they are one of gods creatures i have squirrels come to my back door every day they are so much fun to watch with all their athletic ability so are so tame they look right in my window every day i couldn’t imagine life with out these beautiful creatures
I had an injured squirrel that I had raised from a baby and relocated back to the wild but he comes up every day to eat and one day he came up injured with what appeared to be barbed wire. Because he is used to being handled I put Neosporin on the wounds and they have healed up. I hope this helps. Because the veterinaries in my area will not treat squirrels which is a shame.

I love them they entertain me every day,I love how they come up on the deck to say hello in the morning when I’m having my coffee .it is too bad the vets won’t help them.i noticed one limping today it drives me nuts,no pun intended when I caint help the poor thing.but I’m gonna keep an eye on it.thank you to anyone who feeds and cares for them
I found a baby squirrel on the street outside my parents house we think he fell out of the tree there. Me n my mom went to pet store n got a little bottle n formula, it was so cute to watch him drink his bubba. The next day I was sitting on my mom’s porch and noticed another baby squirrel coming down the tree then he came right towards the porch so I picked him up and took him inside and bottle fed him then put him with his sibling. My mom took care of them until they could eat on there own, they loved peanuts. After a couple months she set them free on the tree where they came from. Every day they came to her front door so she could feed them nuts n give them water. They even brought friends with them to eat so mom was feeding all the squirrels in the neighborhood

Hi michelle. What happened with your paralyzed squirrel? We just had the same type of squirrel encounter but after 2 nights it took oil and we have yet to see him he did have Bill at each leg joint and we think his knee joints were injured and then scarred down allowing him to walk.

There’s a squirrel in my yard with an injury to its leg an open wound it looks like es por region just fine and seems to get around okay however the open wound will probably get infected I imagine what is your advice leave it be or try to trap it and get it help
Hi Bryan, here’s what I’d do. If you don’t already know the number to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in your area, you can call a local vet’s office and ask whether or not they take in injured wildlife. Some do and some won’t (and can’t) so it’s best to find somewhere to take the squirrel before you even try to catch him/her. If there is a local animal hospital near you, try there too as they may have sources that a local veterinarian won’t.
Once you have this information, it’s a good idea to store it in your phone in case you come across any other animals that need your help. In my area there is an animal hospital who has a wildlife vet come in for a few hours and you can drop off injured wildlife there to be treated.
To trap the squirrel you’ll need a trap and a little bit of food. An experienced wildlife rehabilitator can give you advice (some may even come to you) on what the safest trapping methods are, which is another reason it’s best to contact them before doing anything.

I called the humane society and they told me to call Animal control. So I did and told them I had an injured squirrel and they laughed at me! Where I live we don’t have any proffessianals. How do I help the little guy? His back legs are broken I think..I have him in a recycling bin with branches, watermelon and nuts… But he barely moves.. What do I do???

Lilly, You should contact a local wildlife rehabilitator in your area. If you aren’t familiar with one, call your local 24-hour emergency veterinarian and ask them- they’ll probably be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.
No advise on taking care of injured squirrel except call an expert trained in dealing with them. Come on already. Stock up on peanuts, provide protection, etc…

Our tips are meant to help you get the animal in a safe place and warm until you can get to someone who knows exactly what injured squirrels need. Also, there are very strict laws in place about rehabilitating wildlife which vary by area- it may not be legal where you are at to have a caged squirrel on your property. Sorry mate.
