Could This Be the Love of My Life?

A fortune cookie, a rescue beagle, and one of those little realizations that strengthens my ethics? Yep, that's a perfect storm.

What's in this post

At a dinner with co-workers recently, I opened my fortune cookie to find the following: “The love of your life will suddenly appear in front of you.” We joked about a good-looking man dropping by the table any moment. That didn’t happen.

A few days later, Mom and I went to PetSmart during a National Adoption Weekend to see who the rescues had brought in. And there was my girl.

Millie is a beagle, approximately four years old, and she was rescued from Virginia in April. Adopted by another family, she was turned in a week before we saw her. Let me tell you why.

Her prior family had a small child. The child liked to pull on Millie’s ears. Finally, Millie had enough, and she growled at the child, so they gave her up. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what I think of that story, but I’m also sure you’ll agree that their loss is our gain.

Millie has been the sweetest girl – happy to see me when I wake up each morning, content to sit down for a thorough petting, and absolutely overjoyed at meal time. She hasn’t barked once – we’re still waiting to hear her voice. She’s fighting a bout with kennel cough right now like a champ, but trying to wipe her paws with a solution to clear up some dermatitis is a bit of a battle.

It hasn’t been all that long and I don’t want to be too presumptuous, but perhaps Millie is that love of my life mentioned in my fortune. She reminds me of just how extraordinary animals are – even when humans don’t treat them as well as they should be treated, they have a capacity for forgiveness and affection that is rare in this world. And to think, we dare to disbelieve their intelligence.

Is there a furry, feathered or scaled love in your life? Tell us about him or her!
