Friends of Animals calls for a boycott of Idaho Potatoes

We’re going to start this story with the original press release from Friends of Animals simply because it says it all the best: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Priscilla Feral Phone: (203) 656-1522 Even though wolves were only taken off the Endangered Species List in Idaho in May, 2009, Idaho Gov. Butch Otter is not only endorsing the proposed trophy hunt this fall, he’s vowed to participate in it. He told a group of hunters, “I’m prepared to bid for the first ticket to shoot a wolf myself.” The wolf hunt is an apparent effort to boost elk populations for hunters to slaughter, and will begin on September 1, 2009. The permit to kill a wolf costs $11.50—with 220 wolves set to be killed statewide. Equally dismaying is the fact that Gov. Otter claims to “respect” wolves—making the nonsensical claim, in an interview with The Idaho Statesman, “You can still hate [...]

YDV Monday means Rustic Pizza

Rustic Pizza Nom nom nom…nom..nmmm… This is um…nom nom nom…the YDV Meatless Monday meal.  It’s pretty…nom nom nom…..good.  You should totally try it out.  I did and here’s how it all went down. I went searching at the local health food store for a vegan pizza crust.  I’ve never made a crust myself and the task seemed pretty daunting to me.  I search high (in the refrigerated section) and low (in the dairy section!?) but couldn’t find a crust that didn’t have honey in it.  I made a quick stop at the bread section but didn’t see anything there either.  Sigh.  So I began the hunt for a pizza crust mix.  Yes, I require a mix.  There! I admit it. Moving on… I found this and only this as far as pizza crust mixes were concerned: Sweet.  The gluten free didn’t bother me a bit.  [...]

University of Maryland gets with the vegan program

It's pretty awesome to see that some Universities are waking up to the fact that healthy vegan food is in.  The University of Maryland Dining Services will introduce new vegan and vegetarian options this semester to promote healthy eating habits among students.  The new menu will be available by the end of the month (today?). The hope is that, by expanding their vegan options, they will not only encourage vegans but all students to eat healthy. John Gray is the senior executive chef for Dining Services.  He said he found the Sprouts section of the Diner lacking in variety.  “Before my time, our main food supplier dropped a lot of vegan products,” Gray said. “Over the summer, we’ve found a company that stocks all these products.”  And that's good news since it means that there will be more vegan options by the end of the year.  And Gray isn't the [...]

The Truth is, that belt is hot

There's some truth to these stylishly fabulous belts, they are cruelty-free and vegan.  Truth Belts owner, Renia Pruchinick, tells the story of how it all began. "My background was as a technical designer of backpacks and skiwear and luggage...So, I was familiar with all these materials and had never used leather before." Renia Pruchnicki has a degree in fashion design from Ryerson University.  In 2001 she lost her job as a designer.  It was then that Truth Belts was founded.  She enrolled a self-employment program offered by the government and set up shop.  But it didn't come without challenges, "When I first started I didn't have any money and all the sales I made had to be reinvested back into the company," she said.  Indeed, it took her 2 1/2 years before she even made a profit.  But she never thought about quitting.  She took a [...]
