Sometimes, the tools to open a dialogue can be found in the most benign places. It's up to us to take the opportunity – like a cartoon about a fish – and make sure it's not tuned out by the exploitative world we live in.

I propose a new celebration. Let's make this upcoming Valentine's Day the start of something great. Let's make February 14 the first day in a year of love by way of veganism.

My vegan journey is ever-evolving. I did things early in my veganism that I wouldn't do today. I don't mind telling you that I've made mistakes on my journey. And before that, in my pre-vegan days, I made regretful decisions that cost animals their lives.
