Well, well PETA…what have we here?

Interesting, isn’t it, when things that you’ve said before show up later in a totally unrelated thing.  But that, when it happens, it reaffirms your position in the first place?  Yes, I think so too. Today I was perusing Ecorazzi and came across this post.  Check it out, I’ll wait.  It’s basically about Fiat using animals in their latest advertising.  Well, not just using them, making them be in the crash test cars themselves.  I’ve got stuff to say about that, like how it reaffirms the “animals are expendable” belief.  You wouldn’t see a company use images of humans in a crashing test car would you?  But I’m more intrigued by the path that the links sent me on. Ecorazzi reported information found on autobloggreen.com.  So I went to autobloggreen to check it out.  The post title is, ‘PETA Alert: Fiat underscores eco-friendliness using unique advertising campaign’.  And, as intended, […]

And, as intended, it made me wonder what PETA had to say about the advertising.  So I went to PETA’s blog to check it out.  And I found this.

This screams “Will you take us seriously now PLEASE?!”, which I find ironic.  I’ve mentioned this before, but PETA has and does use any tactic they can think of to get attention.  I’ve also said I believe respect and intelligence win out over crazy tactics any day.  And while you may change one mind, you may tarnish a million more.  Is it worth it?

And it sounds like PETA is getting the message.  Some people find them silly, ridiculous and radical.  The message that is so important, the animals in need, is lost because no one takes you seriously.  Especially when you tell them you are going to make sweat-infused tofu from George Clooney’s used gym towel.  I believe PETA has good intentions.  I can attest, from personal experience, that Ingrid Newkirk is a dyamic speaker and delivers a powerful message about animal activism.  But the tactics used to gain attention is comparable to an attention seeking 14 year old girl trying to dress older than she is for the wrong reasons.  In the end, you’ll never be taken seriously because everyone’s already seen ‘you’re kind of crazy’.

What’s interesting is that I went back to the original post on autobloggreen to read it again.  There was 1 comment on the article.  Snoopy’s comment reads:

“Weird, but sort of cool.  I hope PETA doesn’t actually start up something with this. It’ll only give them more publicity.”

It’s a nice way of saying “I’m sick of your campaigns because you make them all seem so stupid so quit bugging us”.  And that, like I’ve said before, is exactly my point.

PETA actually invests their donated money in the animal industry. They celebrate minor reforms by KFC by actually advertising for them. PETA objectifies women, and kills 80-90 percent of healthy adoptable animals every year.

Why do people (commenters) jump to the defense of PETA? Do you know there are other animal rights orgs out there? Given these facts, why even consider them an AR org at all?
