The U.S. government has recommended an endangered listing for the Loggerhead sea turtle.  The Loggerhead’s numbers have been decimated by fishing gear and damage to their nesting sites.

A primary benefit of the endangerment listing is the public pressure on protecting the species.  But the government would also have to determine the “critical habitats” where the turtles reproduce or forage. Such places could be subject to additional protections for the turtles, including restrictions on maritime development or fishing.- Elizabeth Griffin, marine wildlife scientist

With the endangered listing, regulatory action on fishing could be enacted. I can hear fishermen bitching already.

Loggerhead sea turtles travel across the oceans thousands of miles in their 50 year lifespan.  Nothing short of majestic.
