PostSecret shows sexual secrets having to do with dogs, upsetting others- namely, me. Am I overreacting?

In this article

I have been a reader of PostSecret for a long time.  For those who don’t know, PostSecret is where people write their secrets down on a postcard and send it to Frank Warren, the owner of PostSecret.  Frank then compiles them and posts them to his website.  He has also, over the years, published several books of secrets.  This website has helped thousands of people connect themselves to the outside world and even has helped to save lives of those on the edge of suicide.  Over the years I have enjoyed going there to read the secrets and even considered sending my own in.

That was, of course, until I saw the following secret(s) in the new PostSecret book “The Secret Lives of Men and Women”:

A page in "The Secret Lives of Men and Women"

I’m not going to comment on the secret of eating dog.  I don’t agree with it but more disturbing to me is that Frank decided to print a secret about animal abuse.  Yes, animal abuse.  To force an animal into performing sex acts is disgusting no matter which way you look at it.  I don’t care if having sex (any kind of sex) with an animal seems appealing to you – it is wrong.  If that were a child then Frank would never have printed the secret.  But instead he published it in a book for the whole world to see.

That, to me, says “hey, forcing your dog to go down on you is okay as long as you keep it a secret”.  It isn’t right, it isn’t a secret sex act that should be acknowledged in any shape or form.  This one secret could be misconstrued and someone out there could get an idea that it’s okay to do this and start to do it themselves.  It is promoting sex with animals.  Which is not right.

The other animals we share this planet with are not ours to abuse.  Just because you can does not mean that you should.  This goes back to respect for all life and not just humans.  We must teach our children about respecting the animals.  Maybe then this type of thing wouldn’t happen.

In today’s world there are people out there fighting for their rights to marry, adopt children or even be considered good moral humans.  They are fighting for these rights simply because they are gay.  As an example,  some people who oppose gay marriage have (recently in fact) stated that the “ultimate conclusion” of legal same-sex marriage is legal polygamy, bestiality, child molestation,  and pedophilia just to name a few.  And these poor people aren’t having sex with animals or children – they just want to be permitted to love whom they love.

We talk about animal rights alot on Your Daily Vegan because the animals cannot speak human.  This, I believe, is a very underdiscussed aspect of animal rights.  It’s unfortunate that we even need to discuss it at all but here we are.  A very popular website with a lot of followers is allowing someone to promote animal abuse by posting their secret.

But what do you think?  Is it animal abuse or am I completely overreaacting?  Should we promote having sex with animals?  FYI, the book I pulled this from was at a Barnes and Noble bookstore on the 2nd to last shelf.  How tall are our children?  I am confident that a child could have picked this colorful picture book up from a shelf and read it in the aisle.  Now we are exposing sex with animals to our children.

And people in this country are worried about allowing 2 people of the same sex to be married?  I think we have bigger problems than love folks.  Much bigger than that.

I agree with you that this is wrong and immoral, however, where do we expect Post Secret to draw the line?

I have seem secrets about incest, sexual abuse and drug use. You stated above “If that were a child then Frank would never have printed the secret.” That’s not entirely true, I have seen more than one person talk about their own sexual abuse, that occurred when they were children, on Post Secret. Granted, that is different than posting the abuser’s secret, but still.

My point is that there are many secrets that people will find awful, but that is the point of Post Secret, it was made so people can anonymously confess. Who knows, maybe the person who sent in the secret that you are referring to feels awful about it and sent the secret in as a way to seek forgiveness.

I think that more energy should be focused on sites that actually condone animal abuse. I am sure there are fetish sites out there that are a lot worse than this.

To me he brought attention to the fact that it happens and now more people are aware of it. It may be my rose colored glasses, but that’s how it feels to me.

On PostSecret books being where kids can get to them: I think we need to keep an eye on our kids *everywhere*. Even in a book store. PostSecret has secrets about being raped by step-dads, loving anorexia, etc. I don’t want my boys exposed to 90% of the secrets people send in. Then again, I don’t want them reading J.D. Robb book either but it’s where they could reach it too.

I don’t think you are overreacting, by the way. I think you are reacting to what you feel.
