Vegan Beware. It’s the headline that’s been making it’s way around the internet ever since QuarryGirl.com’s “Operation Pancake”. Sounds more delicious than a vegan warning doesn’t it? But this time “Operation Pancake” is the undercover investigation into the vegan restaurants in LA. Undercover vegans? Hell yeah! So here’s the deal. Seventeen vegan restaurants were chosen and 21 dishes were procured from each. Then the “samples” were sent to an independent testing facility to see if they contained any animal ingredients. The results were stunning with the some of the food containing egg, shellfish or casein. Not very vegan at all, is it? It just shows how integrated animal products are in our society and how important animal activism is. Working to expose animal ingredients in products claiming that they are vegan is so important. This investigation, along with the outrage it has created, sends a message to the manufacturers of [...]

It just shows how integrated animal products are in our society and how important animal activism is. Working to expose animal ingredients in products claiming that they are vegan is so important. This investigation, along with the outrage it has created, sends a message to the manufacturers of vegan goods that “we do not want ANY animal ingredients in our food” (and I’m sure those restaurants know that the vegans are watching). And it’s a message that is so important. Vegans do not use animals in any way.
So, vegans beware. Sadly, I’m sure this problem isn’t limited to just LA restaurants. Read labels, ask questions and most importantly stand strong. Every person choosing a vegan lifestyle is making a difference in the lives of the animals we share the planet with.

As a vegan, I couldn’t care less whether or not there are microscopic traces of dairy and egg in my food. Worrying about that level of purity does nothing for the animals. In fact, it’s counterproductive because it sends the message that being vegan is way too hard for the average person to do.
Food equipment is expensive. A lot of restaurants therefore buy it second hand, and a lot of factories rent out the same equipment to many companies. Equipment is cleaned between uses, but it’s impossible to clean off every last molecule. It’s unrealistic to expect zero traces of animal products, unless the vast majority of people become vegan. And that’ll only happen if we make it easy to be 99.9% vegan.

Thanks for posting this! They really put a lot of work into getting to the bottom. I remember hearing years ago about some restraunts in LA with problems, surprisingly one that was mentioned before, Vegan Express, was on the safe list. Thankfully me favorites, Real Food Daily and Native Foods were clean. I would have been very shocked if they weren’t.
