Smells like Tom's of Maine Deodorant Stinks...wait, that's me.

In this article

First, this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant.  Which, for those who don’t know, means you is going to sweat.  Now that that’s out of the way, Tom’s of Maine, Long-Lasting Care “does not contain artificial or animal ingredients” and states “no animal testing.”

Before I get into the ingredient list, let me say this, this stuff didn’t work for me.  Allow me to illustrate my point.

I present Exhibit A: Jo-Z. She’s not sure why I’ve asked her to sniff my pits but she’s down with helpin’ a girl out.  Until she actually sniffs it, that is.

Tom's of Maine Deodorant*Jo-Z was not harmed during the sniffing or photographing of this review.  Stunned maybe, but not harmed.

As you can see, Jo-Z was nearly knocked out cold when exposed to the olfactory scents of my underarms, pre-treated with Tom’s.

The first ingredient is Propylene glycol which, as we know (go to Sundries and Such on Commercial Street), is a known carcinogen, skin irritant, and endocrine disruptor.  It is also chemically derived from the petroleum industry.  How that is not “artificial” totally blows my mind.  Tom’s seems concerned too- they have a whole page devoted to excusing their use of propylene glycol.

Tom’s euphemism for petroleum derivative:

Propylene glycol is a derivative of natural gas.

“Natural” gas.

The Remainder of the ingredients is pretty benign, as is its effectiveness.

This may work for some, but as I said, not me.  There are still a plethora of cruelty-free deodorants on the market- lichens, salt crystals, tea tree oil, etc…- stay tuned.

Goatz Rating 1Tom’s of Maine, Long-Lasting Care, gets 1 Goat, for trying.

Great deo works well, the Propylene is vegetable derived, as can be found at about 50% of whatever food you eat. (roughly).

First of all, the Lemongrass scent smells good, until overpowered by the scent of my pits within 15 minutes of stepping outdoors (Texas in the summertime…oh, yeah. It is HOT!!). The kicker, though, is the noxious propylyne glycol….right there with the first ingredients. When I saw it listed, I flipped the product over, and yup, sure enough, it still claims to be “Natural,” amazingly. What health-savvy person wants a petro-chemical in their body products? Endocrine disruption comes to mind, as well as carcinogen properties. I had heard Tom’s had sold out to Colgate, which was sad as I had really l iked the mindset of Tom’s up until that point. Colgate is historically NOT a company I could support in good conscience, but I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. I LOVE your website, btw! I stumbled across it just now looking up the propylene glycol issue… Glad to have found your informative and entertaining blog!

Another problem is that Tom’s is owned by Colgate-Palmolive who most certainly do test on animals. Boo.

I’ve heard a lot of people have a bad reaction to it. I don’t have overly sensitive skin so I had no problems, but it didn’t really work very well for me. The scented ones SMELL good, but don’t do much for odour outside of say, a 30 minute timeframe!

Okay so I used this stuff and it gave me a horrible rash under my arms! No kidding! It was the lemongrass kind… but it sucked! Just saying! My skin literally peeled off and I couldn’t wear any kind of deodorant until my under arms healed up! This crap is for the… well… not the birds!

Yeah, their deodorants don’t work for me, either. I stick with salt crystals or roll-ons. The scented ones smell good though.
