Sanctuary Season! Opening Weekend in the Catskills

April is here, and that means one thing in New York State’s Catskill Mountains… time to visit the sanctuaries!

National Lawn and Garden Month: Food Not Lawns

April is National Lawn and Garden month (Who knew? Not I!).  I like many others have little interest in lawns or gardens, but I discovered this to be a fascinating topic, especially with a vegan frame of thinking.  There is a new form of grassroots activism that is countering our traditional uses of lawns…especially front yards.  It is called Food Not Lawns (FNL)… that has a familiar ring to it, right?  This is because it is an offshoot of Food Not Bombs (FNB)…activism that combines nonviolence and feeding the poor.  The first organization of FNB was formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists.  The movement has spread across the world.

Taco Bell Slams Vegetables in Ad

Vegetables. They’re pretty amazing, when you get right down to it. Colorful. Full of nutrients. Good raw, good cooked. Easy to pack for an on-the-go snack, and easy to prepare and incorporate into an at-home meal.  And still, they get a bad rap. Kids will sit at the dinner table in protest, refusing to finish the peas on their plate. Carrot sticks will sit pathetically in a baggie, forgotten in the presence of a bag of chips.  It’s no wonder this happens when even marketing firms knock them.  Taco Bell had come up with a commercial touting a twelve-pack of tacos for the Superbowl in January. Their tactic? Shaming you for bringing a crudité to game day: “Secretly, people kind of hate you for it.” Yep, vegetable shaming is a thing now.

Year of the Snake: Cobra

The Cobra Snake- are they so feared with their venomous bite, but are they really as “cold” as we think?  Snakes have had a bad reputation for probably as long as humans have existed.  Some of that is deserved as there are conflicts between species in nature competing for the same things.  Really though – humans have become the primary, dominating agitator.  Humans also have a hard time empathizing and connecting with snakes because of how far removed we are from each other….Snakes and humans have not shared a common ancestor in the evolutionary tree of life for 225 million years!  They are very different creatures but are still intelligent and unique in their own right.  Here’s what we want to know, can they protect puppies?

Vegan Toast Au Pain

One of my first memories as a child was sitting in my booster seat anxiously waiting for my mom to cook up my favorite meal of all time. Years later I learned how to veganize it and now I make it all the time for my family. It’s a quick and simple meal that’s perfect for any busy vegan on the go.  One thing I can guarantee you, this recipe will revolutionize the way you cook.

Vegan Stories from Around the Globe:

Sen. Roy Blunt: Monsanto’s Man in Washington. “As I reported a couple of weeks ago, a recent Senate bill came with a nice bonus for the genetically modified seed industry: a rider, wholly unrelated to the underlying bill, that compels the USDA to ignore federal court decisions that block the agency’s approvals of new GM crops. Which senator pushed the rider into the bill? At the time, no one stepped forward to claim credit. But since then, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) has revealed to Politico‘s ace reporter David Rogers that he’s the responsible party. Blunt even told Rogers that he ‘worked with’ GMO seed giant Monsanto to craft the rider.”

A renaissance for ‘pigsticking’ in Spain. “An ancient hunting ritual is making a comeback in modern Spain: the practice of hunting wild boar on horseback with spears — and no guns. The sport dates to Roman times, and was recently approved and added to Spanish hunting regulations.”

Algae bloom kills record number of Florida manatees. “More than 200 manatees have died in Florida’s waterways since January from an algae bloom called red tide, just as wildlife officials try to remove the marine mammal from the endangered species list. It used to be boat propellers that were the biggest killer of manatees, but red tide has been especially bad this year.”

Eat fish and prosper? NPR continues their slide into the abyss of mainstream, non-critical journalism: “We’ve all heard that eating fish is good for us. Regularly eating fish has been linked to a host of health benefits – for our hearts, our eyes, and our brains.” On the same page is a link to, “Making bacon that’s healthier for you.”
