Harold Brown: The Low Down on the “New Animal Production”

Harold Brown presents the following at 5:15-6:15pm.

Harold BrownConsumers are hearing a lot about alternative systems of producing animals and their by-products for food. Colony cages, barn raised, grass fed, free range, humanely raised/produced, etc. Harold Brown, a former farmer from Michigan will explore these ideas and practices ranging from industrial to back yard.  Are they healthier? Are they better for the environment? Are the animals happier? Farmer Brown will share the practical realities of animal production.

Harold Brown, a character in the documentary Peaceable Kingdom, The Journey Home, spent over half of his life in agriculture.  Growing up on a beef farm in Michigan and later working in the dairy industry Harold has been involved in the behind the scenes operations of food production that uses animals. Today Harold is an activist advocating for sustainable food production, social and environmental justice, animal rights and peace through non-violence.

Carol J. Adams: Veganism is a State of Mind

Carol J. Adams presents the following at 6:30-7:30 pm.

Carol J. AdamsMany cultural barriers may seem to exist to keep you from exploring veganism: assumptions about what people should eat, assumptions about who is a vegan, assumptions by friends and families that becoming a vegan is a way of saying “no” to them. Carol will draw on her work in The Sexual Politics of Meat and Living Among Meat Eaters to describe how more than anything, veganism is a state of mind – and once you adopt that state of mind, everything else falls more easily into place.

Carol J. Adams is the author of the ground-breaking classic, The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory which focuses on the links between the oppression of women and that of non-human animals. For more than 30 years, Adams has written extensively on vegetarianism, animal rights, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.
