Melting Icebergs Act as Inspiration for Footwear Collection
By Crystal Tremblay, Guest Contributor
While Mats Rombaut’s debut Fall/Winter 2013 shoe collection is being shipped all around the world, he’s already getting ready to present his second collection. His eco-friendly, avant-garde style footwear company, Rombaut, is already endorsed by a slew of companies like Layers in London and The Number 4 in Kuwait. Not only is his line “green” but it is vegan as well.
The designer told Interview Magazine, “What I wanted to do is make more of a statement by going green. I’m wondering what the point of selling faux crocodile bags is; it’s still promoting the killing of the animal.”
Focusing on Ugandan bark cloth for his first collection, he is always in search of other organic fibers to use for upcoming collections. His second collection, “Walking on Thin Ice,” was inspired by melting icebergs and the constant climate change and used white bark harvested from mulberry trees on South Pacific islands.
