When you decide that you want to share your life and home with an animal, think! It's a 10-15 year (or more if you're lucky) commitment to that animal.

So, I’ve been looking for a job. Someone told me I should go to this craigslist website and look there. I had no idea what craigslist is. I mean, I had heard of it in passing but the comments were always something like “oh, they hooked up on craigslist”. It’s no wonder I thought it was a cheap and sleazy website. And how right I was.
I was so confused by this site. First, it is hard to look at. It’s harsh and bright and awful. Secondly, the layout stinks and, quite frankly, it looks cheap and sleazy.
In clicking around the site I notice that they have a section called “all community“. This has all kinds of subcategories but you can just click on the “all community” and it pulls up everything. I don’t know what the category is supposed to be for but apparently people use it to dump their unwanted animals.
This is an actual ad on craigslist:
I NEED A HOME!!!!!! (NEWBURY)

I HAVE A 4 YR OLD PIT MIX. HIS NAME IS RUFFUS AND VERY LOVING TO A COUPLE WITH NO CHILDREN. RUFFUS LOVES ATTENTION AND CUDDLE WITH YOU!! RUFFUS DON’T LIKE CATS AND KIDS HE’S AFRAID OF AND TREATS THEM LIKE TOYS. HE DOES SOME TRICKS AND PRETTY SMART. iF INTERESTED CALL 440-739-0174 OR 440-739-0312 OR EMAIL ME FOR MORE INFO. I REALLY DON’T WANT TO SEND HIM APL AND WANT HIM TO HAVE A GOOD HOME!!!!
Are you kidding me? WTF?! What does “I really don’t want to send him apl” mean? I get so pissed when I read that someone “loves their pet and wants them to have a good home” but they are still getting rid of the animal. Why did you get the animal in the first place? Listen, I realize that life happens. We can’t plan for everything and there may be times when an animal becomes displaced. But those should be the exception not a rule. When you decide that you want to share your life and home with an animal, think! It’s a 10-15 year (or more if you’re lucky) commitment to that animal. Animals are not toys, they are sentient beings. I think it’s way past time to remember that.

I do agree with most of the other posts. However, on the idea of charging adoption fees, that is recommended and some sites won’t let you post for animals for free. One reason is is that there are people looking for free animals on these sites so that they can turn around and sell them to labs.
Also, I have a 14 yr old cat that I love and I have an 8 yr old son who is highly allergic to her and he has asthma and if he is around the cat, he starts wheezing. I tried putting him on meds to control the asthma symptoms, but without going into detail, they messed him up bad.
I want to find a loving home for the cat because I believe she deserves one. I keep her despite the fact that my son gets sick because I do not want her to suffer. No shelter will take her, she is too old and unadoptable according to them or they are full. Plus, the idea of her in a shelter is unbearable. She does not like other animals and I fear a shelter would be terrifying for her.
When I got her (she was a gift) I had every intention of keeping her for as long as she was alive and I do still keep her even though I am putting my sons health at risk.

“Animals are not toys, they are sentient beings.”
yes they are… i’m also surprised at how many people try to use their animals for profit… they advertise they’re looking for a good home for them, then when you read their post they want a re-homing fee or re-adoption fee (bs)
i recently adopted two parakeets through craigslist, but i had to post something of my own in big bold letters stating that i was willing to adopt for FREE and if they were serious and honest they’d give me the cage as well… i felt i was forced to sign up and do this because i couldn’t find anyone who really wanted their animal to go to a good home without getting something in return… i mean, i understand the economical hard times people are facing right now, but “Come On Shelly!”
the complaints section of craigslist… hilarious stuff there

It is so surprising when you see people take the view, as Natalie said above, that pets are just entertainment. I know people who go through pets like they are fashion trends and I don’t get that at all. Recently a friend of mine, who is going through a truly terrible time, told me she was forced to sell her house and move into her rental property. Since they have a weight limit there, she was going to have her dog put down. !?!?!?!? I advised her that if she really couldn’t keep him, she should put an ad on the bb at work or take him to a shelter. Her move was a few months off, so I thought, “if she can’t find a home for him, I’ll just take him”. A few days later, I heard that she had to put her dog down. I thought maybe a health issue had come up but NO when I talked to her, she said she just had to do it for the move. I was stunned. It was even harder to hear right now because two people who are dear to me just lost their beloved dogs. All I could think is that this person probably likes dogs a bit and *thinks* she’s a dog person… but she’s not and she needs to never have a pet again. :(
My other thought was – what kind of a vet will put down a dog just because the owner wants to???

Whoa. I wonder what she meant by “weight limit” at an apartment? I completely agree with you in regards to the vet. It makes you wonder what they said to get them to put the dog down. Then again, there are organizations out there that believe it is more humane to put the animal down than to take them to the shelters. That’s part of the problem, the other part (aside from education to the masses) is that animal activist types have been “stigmatized” by very radical animal rights groups and so now everyone just assumes we are all crazy. I think we need to intelligently approach the topic and educate for a more humane and ethical way of living. Veganism isn’t exclusive to one’s diet. It is a way to live your life in tandem with the life that already exists on earth in a peaceful and meaningful way. Once we start that the negative connotations will begin to lesson and real work for animal rights can begin.

The problem is that they dont really think when they get an animal .For some people a pet is just a form of entertainment ,or something that they “think” that they need at that very moment to be happy or be popular or who knows what…
I think that adopting an animal is adopting a family member , a son or a daughter. Its a responsibility for life no matter what happens 15 years down the road .
Would you get rid of ur child cause u are moving to a better house ?
