Liz Carlisle is found guilty, but we already knew she was

Remember Elizabeth Carlisle?  No?

Now?

Yup, that’s her.  To recap her story, she was a Petland employee that drowned two rabbits in the back room because they needed medical care (that apparently Petland was unwilling to offer them), took a picture of it, and posted it to her Facebook account.  Well, she had her day in court.  And, of course, got nothing more than a slap on the wrist.  She received a $250 fine and will perform 120 hours of community service.  Let’s hope that the community service is picking up trash on the side of an Ohio highway in the middle of winter.  Without a jacket.  For days on end.

I’m supposed to feel elated that she was even convicted (found guilty).  I mean, people kill animals every single day, this isn’t so much different- it’s just documented better.  I’m supposed to feel like we’ve made progress towards a kinder world towards animals, but I don’t.  See, I live in Ohio.  I shop at the mall where the Petland used to be.  I live in the community with the people who have followed this case, and I live in the same community as the people who commented on the Ohio.com article on this issue.  And that, that just makes me incredibly sad (and sickened).

This is whom I share my city with (the comments, misspellings and punctuation errors are theirs, emphasis is my own):

~ “Personally, I think this is probably the best resolution for all parties concerned (except the pet store).  What the young lady did was wrong, but the case got blown out of proportion by the media and the animal rights folksThe big loser is the owner of the pet store who lost their business over this matter.

Yup, the big loser was the business owner, not the lives of the two bunnies.

~ “Years in jail for killing a rabbit? Everyone has become too sensitive. She has face public humiliation which is good enough and is much cheaper on the taxpayers. Next you will want jail time for “manslaughter” if I run over a bird or possum in the road. We should be more worried about human rights than animal rights.”

When will people realize that animal rights and human rights are one in the same?

~ “anyone that has grown up on or around a farm knows that this is a perfectly acceptable means of dispatching a tiny animal , next to ringing its neck, especially if said animals have been mauled or severely injured…… taking two tint rabbits to a vet 65.00 per animal to be seen and 45 per to be dispatched….. i think she used good judgement….. as for the PETA people…. people eating tasty animals…… milleniums of eating animals ,get over it….. and rabbit makes an awsome chili”

~ “People are putting there kids in the trash. Who cares about a couple f-ing rabbits?”

~ “I better be careful, I’ve already gotten 10 rabbits, 16 squirrel, 40 or so doves and 1 deer this season. Man I’m in trouble.”

~ “Animal radicals admit they are out to wipe out all pet plus farm animals and to wipe out all rights of all animal owners. They don’t tell us that all vet euthanasia of animals (injured baby rabbits, dogs, horses, etc) is targeted at leaving animal ownership impossible or that vet euthanasia of animals is poisonous to the environment and our water table. Why we’d deliberately pass laws that financially benefit one specific occupation while poisoning the environment for humans and other animals makes no common sense. It’s ok for HSUS to push gassing animals to death (current method of killing poultry for processing) which takes place in processing houses daily, but not ok to drown small injured animals? Rubbish. If this nonsense isn’t stopped when we next step on a spider or ant, we’ll be charged with murder. How many millions of us will be deemed guilty of “animal cruelty” before this creation of a a new groups of criminals to be jailed is stopped? This foolishness is brought to us by supposed leaders such as Cass Sunstein who want to control what is permitted to be discussed on the internet and dictate how our speech may be conducted, harvest organs from living human beings for transplant into the better heeled financially, and who advocate for dumping our Constitution and personally re-writing of The Constitution of the United States. Their thinking isn’t just 4 generations removed from the farms which feed us all; their thinking is removed from reality. Rabbits aren’t the victims here; society and the store employee following orders are. Neither animals nor society is bettered by this type of animal radical related pushed foolishness. Those who express hatred and animosity toward a 20 year old need to check their human and personal values as it appears they’re a bit short of both.”

Really?  Human and personal values?  Really?

~ “What a waste of my tax dollars …all over a couple of useless rabbits, who multiply by the thousands if you’ll let them, just another cute form of vermin, like deer…the only thing this young lady did wrong was to waste her time putting it on facebook pages…the rest of you who want jail time, ect. must be out of your minds…tell you what, if you’ll pay for the entire cost of the trial, jail time and associated fees then fine…otherwise don’t waste my money...bunch of losers who have nothing but time on their hands to harass someone who was doing these rabbits a favor..

And this little gem:

“Rabbit hunting season is currently open in Ohio. Cant wait to post pics if I get any. Unfortuneatly the animal rights people have driven rabbit populations in Ohio to record lows by their misplaced protection of their predators whose fur we once wore. Kill fox, save rabbits! Kill coyotes, save rabbits! Kill racons, save rabbits and all those greasy spots on the highway!

That is what we’ve reduced sentient lives to, “greasy spots on the highway.”

But there was one comment that I could agree with.  Just one.  And I think it sums it up the best….

“if any of you eat meat and are complaining about a few rabbits you are just as GUILTY.”

Exactly right.

Which just proves that we have so much work to do.

Start today.

Go vegan.
