Change Doesn’t Start with a Sports Drink, It Starts With Veganism

We claim that we thrive on change, yet it takes a revolution to make it happen when it really counts. You see, being vegan is revolutionary. It’s a decision to question why the system is set up to oppress and to exploit those who cannot fight. It’s a decision to question the safety of the food-shaped things we are told to eat by ad execs, concession stand operators, and school lunch ladies. It’s a realization that the environment needs attention and there’s a big way to give it. It’s a decision to do better, because we know better.

Are Babies Bad for the Environment?

I was only five, but I can still hear the sound of the water from the tap filling my favorite plastic cup.  These days I have to unscrew a bottle to quench my thirst.  As the human population continues to grow, the amount of natural resources deplete.  With the ever increasing population comes ever increasing pollution and destruction.  And, since the environment has developed into a business commodity and a political game, real protection and conservation programs have all but ceased to exist.  We need to stop allowing the destruction of our environment.

Why Osteoporosis Prevention Should Be a Priority – Even for Vegans

It’s National Osteoporosis Awareness Month, and our own Anya Todd RD explains all of us – vegans included – must make bone health a priority.

Have You Made the Same Mistake as Governor Christie?

But back to the kids and Gov. Christie. He killed a spider; they all cheered. Kids are impressionable. Their actions – and reactions – are greatly influenced by their environment and their elders. What a great opportunity it would have been, had the governor not killed the spider, to show kids that just because we’re bigger and more powerful, we don’t have to kill that which is so very unlike us.

Vegan News from around the globe.

A vegan office: How one workplace has moved to get healthier together. “PCRM has an office policy mandating that only vegan food may be eaten in its office. The organization, which advocates for healthy eating, preventive medicine and ethical clinical research, is so committed to the rule that it notifies prospective employees of the policy when they receive an offer letter for a job. PCRM decided to go vegan for a simple reason. ‘We want to practice what we preach,’ said Susan Levin, the group’s director of nutrition education.”

Putting Abusers Before Animals Is Business as Usual at the HSUS. “A pending bill before the Michigan state legislature would require people convicted of these types of crimes to register with the state. The Animal Abuse registry would then be available to shelters, rescue groups, pet stores, breeders, and the public. Recently, one of the sponsors approached HSUS’ Michigan lobbyist to ask for their support and HSUS refused. And in a blog post, HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle argued against such registries. According to Pacelle, we have to look at it from the abusers’ point of view and ‘strike the right balance between punishment and rehabilitation.’ And finally, he asks, ‘When someone is convicted and punished for cruelty … does shunning or shaming them forever do any good for any animals?’ Animal abuse registries are not about ‘shaming’ or ‘shunning’ abusers, they are about protecting animals from future abuse.”

What to do if you find a baby or injured animal. “Every spring, kind-hearted Hoosiers “rescue” an injured or seemingly abandoned baby wild animal and try to care for it.The DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife has one thing to say: Don’t do it. Picking up a baby animal that is not orphaned or abandoned can harm the animal and take it out of its natural environment where it is meant to be. It’s also illegal.”

Indian tigers face threat ‘due to lack of genetic diversity.’ “India’s tigers are facing extinction owing to a collapse in the variety of their mating partners, say Cardiff University researchers. They found that 93% of DNA variants found in tigers shot the period of the British Raj were not present in tigers today Prof Mike Bruford said the genetic diversity needed for the species to survive had been ‘lost dramatically’. There are fewer than 2,000 tigers left worldwide, 60% in India.”

UK claims breakthrough in fish dumping talks. “The UK says it has agreed new laws with the European Union over the controversial dumping of unwanted fish. Fisheries minister Richard Benyon said the ‘reforms’ would make discards ‘a thing of the past’. But green groups were less upbeat, saying the European Parliament’s plans on fishing reform were more ambitious. After marathon talks, EU fisheries ministers agreed on a reform package including a ban on dumping pelagic fish, such as mackerel and herring.”
