Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods won’t sell GM salmon. “The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the final stages of deciding whether to allow GM salmon on to the market. If approved, AquaBounty Technology’s salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal to enter the food supply. The company combined genes from two species of salmon with a pouter eel to produce a fish it says it can bring to market twice as fast as conventional salmon. The GM salmon is the first in some 30 other species of genetically engineered fish under development, including tilapia. Researchers are also working to bring GM cows, chickens, and pigs to market.”
Cats. On BBC Nature. “Cats are more purely carnivorous than any other meat-eating family and they like their meat fresh, relying on prey they have caught and killed themselves. Cats usually live solitary lives, with one famous exception: the lion, the only truly social cat.”
Did Congress just give GMOs a free pass in the courts? “Tucked inside a short-term funding measure that Congress approved Thursday is a provision that critics are denouncing as a ‘Monsanto Protection Act.’ The so-called ‘biotech rider’ was included in legislation that won final approval from the House, avoiding a shutdown of the federal government on March 27, when the current funding was set to expire. The provision was slipped into the legislation anonymously. It explicitly grants the U.S. Department of Agriculture the authority to override a judicial ruling stopping the planting of a genetically modified crop.”
Singer Lily Allen slams vegans as ‘loonies’ after pig-slaughter tweet. “Singer Lily Allen lashed out at vegetarians and vegans who criticized her for suggesting she would slaughter a pig to help raise money for charity. Allen, 27, clarified her remarks in a series of tweets to her four million Twitter followers. ‘Jesus. Some of these vegans are loonies,’ Allen tweeted March 11. ‘If the hippies could just get off my back, I’d be very grateful.'”
