Here’s another ill-informed person talking up some nonsense. The writer over at ifitandhealthy.com calls veganism “nutritional masochism,” and says that vegans living longer healthier lives is an “utter fallacy.” Sounds like another traditionalist who’s been living under a rock since the turn of the century. Maybe they didn’t get to see the latest paper that was published by The American Dietetic Association stating that vegetarian and vegan diets are healthy: “It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes.” It’s the same old tireless rant from non-vegans about vegans attempting to eat an impossible diet that also tastes like [...]

It’s the same old tireless rant from non-vegans about vegans attempting to eat an impossible diet that also tastes like shit. The same old false assumption (based on the possible one vegan acquaintance the writer has) that we are all frail and pigment-less because we only eat fruits and vegetables.
It all starts with the Top Chef episode featuring Zooey Deschanel’s vegan requirements. What I don’t get is why the writer has such disgust for vegans. Did some vegan bullies in the third grade always steal the apple he/she brought for the teacher?
Get over it ifitandhealthy. The fact is that veganism and the vegetarianism you despise is becoming more mainstream because people are realizing the facts and refusing to be discouraged by conventional media. I guarantee that the few other judges and chefs on Top Chef speak from plain old ignorance – not experience or true knowledge.
The writer also states (apparently due to so much pent up hatred against us evil vegans) that “saving chickens is hardly a better reason” (than living a healthier life) to be vegan. Disrespectful to sentient life. Apparently ignorant of factory farm cruelty and abuse. Uneducated in terms of what diets are healthy for the human body. All from a site so ineptly named, “i-fit-and-healthy.”

Just because Cletus has a “right” to eat slaughtered animals does not make it right. It’s also legal to treat animals as property. It’s legal for agencies in some states to jail and fine people for engaging in certain consensual sex acts. There are plenty of legal rights that are, we could mostly agree, nonsensical at best and a violation of true moral rights at worst.
Vegans don’t subscribe to some absurd notion that wild animals shouldn’t kill their prey. Humans are not predators like wild animals are predators. It’s absurd to compare an intelligent, rational human to a wild carnivore. We have evolved and are continuing to do so. To cling to a past notion of killing animals to eat for survival is backwards thinking that ignores our evolution as a more intelligent being. The fact is we do not need to kill non-humans for food any more than we have to start fires from rocks and sticks to not freeze to death- we’ve found better ways to do such things.
If people get a sense that vegans believe meat eaters are committing immoral acts, I would say that is a correct assumption. That’s why we are vegan- we believe it’s wrong to kill another sensient being for our own selfish pleasures. We don’t need meat. In fact, we are healthier without it.
Am I better than Cletus because I’m vegan and he’s not? Based on the fact that he kills for taste I would scream a resounding, “HELL YES.”
I’m not afraid or concerned at all with upsetting someone or making them feel uncomfortable
for killing animals for their selfish pleasures. They should feel that way, and they do because they know, deep inside that it’s wrong.
Do I sound defensive? I should. These animals can’t defend themselves.
-
It is most assuredly within Cletus’ rights to eat that Big Mac though, I hope we can all agree on that.
Don’t predators in the animal world kill and devour other animals? Wouldn’t you agree that the animal world is much, much more harmonious than our own? Is the problem the way we treat our animals that are to be killed for food? Or is it that we humans are conscious of our actions and can (should?) make the decision to not eat animals?
I get a sense from some vegans and vegetarians that they think what meat eaters are doing is morally wrong, and that they are the better person for not eating meat.
Think of it this way: I’m sure a meat eater has tried to convice you to try some meat, but have they ever said stop eating fruits, vegetables or soy products? Probably not. Instead of trying to convince someone to stop eating meat, try to convince them to eat some vegan foods. Who knows, maybe you’ll get someone hooked on veggie burgers. While an ignorant meat eater is bashing your lifestyle, promote yours in a positive way instead of getting defensive about it.

We cannot “all live in harmony” while Cletus is enjoying a bigmac. Veganism is not solely about dietary choices. While all the meateaters are killing for their selfish pleasures, there is NO harmony in the animal world- and there never will be if we just “ignore them (meateaters) and move on.”
-
Which again brings me to the question, “Did you ever see a print ad or television commercial asking if you’ve had your daily servings of meat?”. I just love those uneducated, narrow minded individuals who do nothing but criticize. Yet we, as vegans, are said to be stuck up, opinionated, arrogant and pushy. Hmmm, I’ve never ragged on someone about THEIR diet….maybe this ‘evil’ vegan should start. :o) What was that, oh yeah, misery loves company…..poor writer must not have enough fiber in their diet.
-
Vegans and vegetarians are an often misunderstood gastronomic minority. The majority of US citizens are devout meat eaters, and it almost seems unnatural to them that somebody would shun and even demonize the consumption of animals.
Veganism is strange to the majority. You don’t eat meat? Or ANY animal products? What’s wrong with you? No amount of reasonable explanation will convice a meat eater, because they just think you’re an idiot and will discount all your reasons for being a vegan.
BUT…let us not forget the smug, holier-than-thou attitude garnered by some vegetarians/vegans. We know them, we’ve met them, or maybe we are them. They look down upon the meat eaters as primitive, uneducated miscreants, duped into eating triple bacon cheeseburgers by mass media. You’ve figured it out, but the rest of the fools haven’t.
It goes both ways. If somebody doesn’t understand your way of life, ignore them and move on. Don’t attempt to convince them of the error of their ways – it never works.
Cletus can eat his Big Mac and Moonbeam can eat her alfalfa sprout sandwich and we can all live in harmony.

Thank you for this… WHY do 90% of the people I speak with have such a strong negative reaction about veganism? It’s mind-boggling and quite ignorant, as far as I’m concerned.
