More cows, idiot, because you made more cows

Farmers use "sexed semen technology" to breed cows selectively for female offspring. Females, of course, produce milk. More milk equals more profit. So, the cows bred with that technology, thousands of them, are entering milking herds across the country. But guess what, now there's too much milk and no demand for it.

A new NY Times article, “More Cows and More Milk Means More Headaches,” is a pretty gruesome article.  Right off the bat is an image of five beautiful bovines being inseminated by a farmer.  I can see the pain and utter despair in the cows eyes from the photo, let alone being there.  Why couldn’t the farmer or the photographer?

Maybe people are wising up that dairy is gross and inhumane.

So what is a farmer to do?  Well, get rid of the “over stock” by culling (aka killing on an industrial scale) the cows, of course.  Over 230,000 heifers have been killed so far this year.  This DNA technology is “expected to put 63,000 extra heifers into milk production this year.”  230,000 lives +  another 63,000 = too damn many lives killed.

When I think about dairy cows, I think of the baby calves and the pain the heifers feel when their babies are taken away.  The point is reinforced in the NY Times article, largely due to an image of baby calves feeding from a bottle (not their mother) – in a cage.  My heart breaks every. single. time.

We must stop exploiting animals for profit (or for any reason).

You can also blame your United States government for subsidizing the heavily lobbied ‘for dairy industry’ for this abomination.

On a side note, mentioned in the NYtimes article, “a fertility institute outside Washington is studying whether the same technique can be used safely in people. If it won approval from the Food and Drug Administration, the technology would let parents choose their baby’s sex.”  I hope it doesn’t get out of hand- like the heifer situation.  We may have to end up “culling” the “herd.”

This is so disgusting. And the picture of those calves without their mamas is so sad. :-(
