News, vegan-style from around the globe.

What's in this post

  • Did veganism kill a French baby?  Or was it a simple case of being uneducated, or was it neglect?  Be warned, anti-vegan rhetoric is sure to kick up a notch.
  • Vegan nutritionist, Messina, weighs in with some enlightenment on vitamin A– it helps in the fight against cancer, and vegans with a balanced diet are sure to get plenty of it.
  • Indonesian researcher and activist spreads the good word on veganism.  “The best source of calcium is sesame seeds, not milk, and you can get your best protein in tempeh not meat.”  His entire family is vegan.
  • Anne the Elephant, a “performer with the Super Circus” for more than 50 years (now with severe arthritis) may soon be free.  (If secret footage of a human suffering the same abuse, it wouldn’t take days to free them- further, we wouldn’t have to get the “owners” to agree to anything.)  A snippet:

A specialist vet from Whipsnade Zoo and RSPCA officers were allowed to visit Anne to check her over after shocking secret footage was passed to the Daily Mail showing her Romanian groom battering, kicking and stabbing her with a pitchfork.

Whipsnade said it would be ‘delighted’ for Anne to join the herd of elephants already living at the zoo.  The 59-year-old Asian elephant’s owners Bobby and Moira Roberts also appeared to be softening their stance on giving her up.

Moira Roberts, 72, said: ‘We will allow Anne to live her days out in a sanctuary as long as we can visit her regularly and as long as she’s cared for properly.’  She added: ‘We have had the RSPCA here today and Bobby has been in talks with them.  The police also accompanied the RSPCA and the vet, she said.
