Federal Grants, Vegan Parents, Vegan Equality, Media Attacks, and 2,500 vegan meals. What do they all have in common? They're all today's vegan news.

In this article

  • Vegan NewsLoving Hut receives a $50,000 Federal Grant to open new restaurant in Claremont, California.  The vegetarian restaurant is set to open in the Village Expansion Plaza area and, not surprisingly, drew some negative discussion among residents.
  • Excellent article from Sarah Hanneken at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee discussing Vegan Parents in the media.  She says, “Considering the consequences that come with an ignorant population, the media would do well to tone down the sensationalism and superficial reporting (on all issues, not just those related to veganism) and pay careful attention to the language they employ. Only by being mindful of thought patterns and tendencies toward generalizations will society ever break the cyclical reinforcement of cultural stereotypes.”
  • UK: Vegan Equality in Law: The 2010 Equality Act – The Code of Practice produced by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in 2009, validated and legitimised veganism by explaining that “belief” could be described by reference to “the ethical commitment central to veganism.”  But then, it didn’t.  “Subsequent to this 2009 draft Code of Practice, and implementation of the 2010 Equality Act however, the final version of the Code of Practice for interpreting equality legislation, disappointingly omits the example of the vegan lifestyle as representative of legal “belief”.”
  • Dilip loves to cook and teaches others how to cook vegan.  He’s cooked dinner for his wife for the past seven years and never repeated a meal.  That is a loving and awesome spouse- and a compassionate man indeed.  See how he did it on his blog Dinner with Dilip and read more about his adventure on, “Happy and Normal” Living the Vegan Way.  A thank you shout out to Erik Markus for doing the math for me, this amounts to 2,500 vegan meals without a repeat.  Wow.

Claremont, California is a small college town that is considered to be the more liberal of the cities in the area. Even still, they tend to be resistant to new things such as Loving Hut. There is a Loving Hut in it’s neighboring city, Upland.
