Vegan cyclist’s photo used for McDonald’s promo. “GNS seismologist Matt Gerstenberger was shaken and a little angry to learn a photo of himself mountainbiking was being used without his permission on a large mural at McDonald’s Wainuiomata. What left a particularly sour taste is that he has been a vegan for nearly 20 years.”

Oceans: Environmental victim or savior? “The effects of climate change, pollution and overfishing should be making headlines because the ocean and all of us — and I literally mean all humankind — who depend on its resources are facing the very real prospect of the catastrophic collapse of ocean ecosystems if we continue on our current course.”

Are agriculture’s most popular insecticides killing our bees? “The pesticides, called neonicotinoids, became popular among farmers during the 1990s. They’re used to coat the seeds of many agricultural crops, including the biggest crop of all: corn. Neonics, as they’re called, protect those crops from insect pests. Last week, a coalition of environmental groups and beekeepers sued the EPA, demanding that the courts force the agency to revoke its earlier approval of two of the most prominent neonicotinoids — clothianidin and thiamethoxam.”

Chinese fishmonger discovers live bomb inside a squid. “This sort of squid lives close to the shore and normally makes a meal of small fish and prawn. Perhaps he thought the bomb was his favourite food and gulped it down. He certainly had a big belly when he was caught.”
