Trees Make Noises, and Some of Those Sounds Are Cries for Help. “It’s easy to dismiss trees as inanimate features of the landscape, but these living, breathing organisms aren’t as stoic as they appear. Trees, it turns out, make all kinds of noises as they grow and respond to their environment. Happy, regularly growing trees sound different from drought stressed trees.”
US animal activist laws ‘may impact globally.‘ “Animal rights activists in the US have told the BBC that so-called ‘ag-gag’ laws could be copied in other countries including the UK. Welfare groups say that the American Legislative Exchange Council is the moving force behind these laws. This group supports conservative causes and promotes legislation to limit the role of government. They have described animal rights campaigners as terrorists.”
Snowshoe Hares Can’t Keep Up With Climate Change. “Snowshoe hares live or die by their coat color—turning brown in the growing season and white in the winter. But the timing of the snow is changing faster than some hares can keep up. Snowshoe hares are the main dinner course for the endangered Canadian lynx, which also inhabits the US. So the hares’ ability to adapt or not could fatten lynx in the short term but, as their population declines, leave the cats starving in the future.”
Critics slam Obama for ‘protecting’ Monsanto. “Protesters have descended on Pennsylvania Avenue outside the White House this week, enraged at a potentially health-hazardous provision they allege lawmakers inserted surreptitiously into a continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the government through the remainder of the fiscal year. The bill sailed through the Capitol on Friday; President Obama signed it into law on Tuesday.”
