National Geographic 125th gala: James Cameron goes vegan, Felix Baumgartner dazzles the ladies. “Cameron revealed he went vegan a year ago, and urged everyone at the gala to read up and do the same. ‘I felt like I was waking up from a long sleepwalk. I believe we are all sleepwalking off a cliff if we don’t do this.’ This came immediately after the shrimp course and just before the entree: bison.”

Exhausted Ghana forest reserves said to put wildlife under threat. “At a panel session on biodiversity and wildlife hosted by the US Embassy in Accra June 13, 2013, Mr. David Kpelle, Manager of the Economical Department of the Ghana Wildlife Division explained that three million people in Ghana are forest dependent and this is a threat to the ‘wildlife conservation because most of the reserved areas are being exhausted.’ According to Mr Kpelle, farming in the country has seriously threatened wildlife and has virtually destroyed wildlife habitat with most of the species completely destroyed.”

Vegan diets taking root among athletes, exercisers. “Olympic skier Seba Johnson has been vegan from birth and tennis star Venus Williams became a vegan after being told she had Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease. Fitness experts say the rewards of a plant-based diet can include more energy, deeper sleep and better performance. ‘We see athletes recovering faster, maximizing training, and thereby improving performance,’ said Julieanna Hever, a personal trainer, registered dietitian and author of  The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition.”

Banned pesticides may be having wider environmental impacts. “Neonicotinoids have now been banned by the European Union because of concerns over bee health. But this latest review of the scientific data suggests the chemicals pose a risk to soil, water and grain-eating birds such as partridge.”
