What’s your mindset?
September 9, 2010
Have you ever wondered why a vegan will become so passionate when discussing what the word vegan means? All of us here at YDV are extremely passionate, or unapologetic, for our veganism- and fiercely proud of it. We take a consistent stand against the use of animals- which, some will attest to, is not always popular amongst the “mainstream” loving folks. And, before I go any further, I just have to say that I don’t care about that one bit. While I believe in respectful discussions on veganism, I do not worry if I am going to “fit in.”
I am passionate and consistent and I have to be. I am working to break stereotypes, myths, and….whatever this is classified as:
“Animal rights” is a phrase that has been stolen by extremists who view farmers and ranchers as terrorists and who advocate for the complete abolition of meat, dairy and egg products in the American diet, as well as the end to livestock production.
That quote is from Animal Rights: What’s Your Definition? published on the popular website, beefmagazine.com. More interestingly, this comment:
I don’t believe animals have the same rights as people, and I also believe that people forget animals are personal property, not people.
So the next time you wonder why vegans are so passionate (or mistakenly thought of as angry), think back to that statement above. It tells volumes about the mindset of humans.
It also tells volumes about what vegans are up against. Think about it.
And Seitan is the winner!

Well, ya’ll voted. I have to say, I’m a bit surprised that seitan skewers won over lemon genoise cake. But, who am I to say? So, without further ado….
Vegan Blueberry BBQ Seitan Skewers
Blueberry BBQ Sauce
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce (unsalted)
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/8 cup agave (I used amber)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp liquid smoke
- 5 cloves of garlic, pressed or minced tiny
- 1 Tbsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 Tbsp oregano
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 2 Tbsp tomato paste
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Wash blueberries. Once washed, put in large saucepan and cook on med. low until the blueberries start to break down and reduce. Turn to low and continue to cook for 10 minutes. Mix all of the other ingredients together in a separate bowl. Once fully combined, add to blueberries. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. The sauce will be flavorful after 20 minutes but if you want truly flavorful sauce, cook it the day before you need it. The flavors will be outrageously yummy the next day.

I’m not a horse, Tofurky.
August 9, 2010
I don’t need that much salt. Neither do you, really. The US RDA for sodium is about 2,000 mg., on the average. Health experts say it should be half that. And most consumers of the fiendishly evil and nasty Western diet, consume twice the RDA. Here’s where Tofurky comes in. Most of the sodium consumed in the Western diet comes from processed foods- and vegan foods are not immune to this phenomenon.
If you’re not reading the nutrition labels and ingredient lists on food, still, then, well, that’s just stupid.
One Tofurky Kielbasa log is 660 mg. So, if you eat it, you’re half-way to the healthy limit of sodium intake. The internets be chock full of infos regarding what too much sodium does to a body, so I’m not going into here. But for the sake of my health insurance premiums, can you please cut down on your salt?
Regardless of the very real dangers of salt in processed, ready-to-eat foods, these Tofurky kielbasas, and the other varieties as well, taste too damn salty. They have good flavor, but my mouth is shriveled from dehydration after chewing this stuff. Who are the taste testers at Tofurky? Horses?
I did find these cool S&P shakers while writing this review. Cool.
Tofurky Sausages get only two goatz because due to the extreme salt, I can only eat half of one at any one time, and it has to be chopped into small pieces and distributed amongst large amounts of other salt-free food stuffs, thereby giving me only half the protein in the thing.
